Who says you can't have a little friendly competition in a combat zone? The two 155mm howitzers in my platoon competing for the fastest, most accurate 10 round Fire Mission (calibration). This is REAL teamwork. (Yes, gun 1 did shoot 10 rounds buddy, nice try though.) Over 12000 105mm and 155m rounds fired by this platoon with ZERO friendly/civilian casualties.

First introduced during the Vietnam War, the M102 was the light-towed 105 mm howitzer used by the United States Army in the Vietnam War and the First Gulf War. It fires a variety of conventional munitions and traverses rapidly through 360 degrees. M102s can be dropped by parachute or transported by utility helicopters for normal movement or air assault operations. The M102 is no longer in use by the United States Army, having been replaced by the M119. It is, however, still in use by the National Guard. It is also used on the USAF's Lockheed AC-130 gunship.

Israel's artillery system house Soltam Systems is producing its 155mm ATMOS (Autonomous Truck MOunted howitzer System) for a number of undisclosed customers. Available on any standard issue 6 x 6 or 8X8 cross country truck chassis, the ATMOS uses the upper part of Soltam systems' 155mm 52 calibre towed gun ATHOS. Versions with 39 and 45 calibre barrels have been fitted according to some of their customer's requests. This versatility is one of the key factors which have convinced armies with ongoing plans for upgrading artillery forces to choose the ATMOS system. Soltam Systems integrating capability has allowed armies to mount their own towed guns onto in service trucks, thus producing a modern, highly mobile, rapidly deployed and cost effective artillery force. Meeting today's demands this new generation wheeled artillery piece is designed for global intervention operations and rapid deployment forces where large operational ranges, low weight and supportability issues are essential.

The 8 inch (203 mm) Self-Propelled Howitzer M110 was the largest available self-propelled howitzer in the United States Army's inventory. It was deployed in division artillery in general support battalions and in separate corps- and Army-level battalions. Missions include general support, counterbattery fire, and suppression of enemy air defense systems. The M110 was exported to a number of countries and remains in service with three NATO armies - the Greek, Spanish and Turkish.

The XM2001 Crusader was to be the United States Army's next-generation self-propelled howitzer (SPH), designed to improve survivability, lethality, mobility, and effectiveness and planned to be introduced by 2008. United Defense was the prime contractor; General Dynamics the major subcontractor. In early May 2002, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld cancelled the $11 billion USD program because he considered it neither mobile nor precise enough. The prototype is on display at the cannon park at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. The Crusader program was cancelled, partly due to the $25 million per copy cost (compared to the German PzH 2000 cost of $4.5 million.) The Pentagon preferred the Crusader design, largely due to its lighter weight. It also had a speed of around 40 mph compared to the PzH 2000 speed of around 37 mph. However, the Pentagon refused German suggestions of producing a PzH that would have detachable armor, which could be shipped separately, or substituting titanium for steel in many parts. The PzH 2000 also required a crew of two more men, considered a disadvantage, but which could also be an advantage. That is, if the crew is cross-trained, and a driver is killed, he could be substituted by another crewman, and vice versa. Another consideration was that the existing Paladin already had advanced characteristics, making it still a very effective weapon. Significant upgrades have increased its usefulness. The Panzerhaubitze 2000 ("Armoured howitzer 2000"), abbreviated PzH 2000, is a German 155 mm self-propelled howitzer developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall for the German Army. The PzH 2000 is one of the most powerful conventional artillery systems currently deployed. It is particularly notable for a very high rate of fire; in burst mode it can fire three rounds in 9 seconds, ten rounds in 56 seconds, and can fire between 10 and 13 rounds per minute continuously, depending on barrel heating. [1] The PzH 2000 has automatic support for MRSI (Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact) for up to 5 rounds. The replenishment of shells is automated. Two operators can load 60 shells and propelling charges in less than 12 minutes. Overall product improvement in the areas of Survivability, RAM, and armament. This includes increased armor, redesigned (safer) internal stowage arrangement for ammunition and equipment, engine and suspension upgrades, and product improvement of the M284 cannon and M182A1 mount. The greatest difference is the integration of an inertial navigation system, sensors detecting the weapons' lay, automation, and an encrypted digital communication system which utilizes computer controlled frequency hopping to avoid enemy electronic warfare and allow the howitzer to send grid location and altitude to the battery fire direction center (FDC). The battery FDCs in turn coordinate fires through a battalion or higher FDC. This allows the Paladin to halt from the move and fire within 30 seconds with accuracy equivalent to the previous models when properly emplaced, laid, and safed--A process that required several minutes under the best of circumstances. Tactically, this improves the systems survivability by allowing the Battery to operate dispersed by pairs across the countryside and allowing the howitzer to quickly displace between salvos, or if attacked by indirect fire, aircraft, or ground forces. On an operational level this weapon represents a dramatic improvement in the performance of field artillery. Based on SOLTAM SYSTEMS 60 years of battle proven artillery systems, offering the advantages of high fire power, mobility and short response time, ATMOS is rapidly deployed and operable in difficult terrain. n 1996 the Russian Motovilikha Plants Corporation fielded the latest of its Nona family, the 2S31 Vena, an automated self propelled mortar, with a longer barrel, (Russian 120mm 2A80) also firing the Gran laser-guided bomb against point targets to 13km range. AMOS II mobile mortar system. The known version was mounted on a BMP-3 chassis and has 70 rounds on board storage ( about twice as much as the former).
The 122-mm howitzer D-30 (GRAU index 2A18) is a Soviet howitzer that entered service in the late 1960s, replacing the M-30 122 mm howitzer. Its longer barrel gave it greater range than the M-30, and once emplaced it could be traversed 360 degrees. It is no longer in production, but remains in service with more than 60 countries' armed services.
