Concerto d'Amore exists of a combination of three different styles, namely baroque, pop and jazz. The stately introduction of the composition sounds like a baroque overture. Then follows an energetic part in pop style, that ends up in a characteristic adagio. A motive from this adagio is assimilated in a swinging part, after which the work finishes with the return of the adagio in a different appearance.

Diogenes (Jacob De Haan)
The title of the composition is derived from the Greek philosopher, Diogenes of Sinope (±400 BC). Diogenes is generally considered the founder of the Cynics, an ancient school of philosophy. The composition is made up of three pieces following into each other without a break, and each based on a traditional story about Diogenes. In the first part it is Diogenes meeting with Alexander the Great. Alexander opened the conversation with: I am Alexander the Great. Then Diogenes said: And I am Diogenes the Cynic. Alexander then asked him what way he could serve him. You can step out of my sunlight, the philosopher replied. Alexander is said to have been so struck with the Cynic's self-possession that he went away remarking: If I were not Alexander, I should wish to be Diogenes. According to tradition, Diogenes died at Corinth on the same day as Alexander the Great (323 BC). The death of Diogenes and the philosophies which he left behind inspired the middle movement. The inspiration for the last movement came from the best legend surrounding Diogenes. According to this popular story, Diogenes walked through Athens in broad daylight carrying a lighting lamp, saying that he was looking for an honest man.

Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the "St. Peters Wind Symphony" from Brisbane, Australia. "Ross Roy" is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition, Jacob de Haan sees the "Ross Roy" as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time), where one's personality is formed. So, the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics. The rhythmic motion, which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of "Tempo di Marcia". This movement, accompanied by repetitions of sound, is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme, symbolic of "passing through" the classes up to the final examinations. Then, the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again, now in a playful, humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section, expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love, friendship and understanding. We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds, constituting the modulation to the final theme, are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the <b>...</b>

The Saint and the City (Jacob De Haan)
This work is based on a well-known myth about the city of Zwolle in the Netherlands. In the waters surrounding Zwolle, lived a dragon that regularly emerged. Time and again he threatened to destroy the city with his fiery breath if he was not given a living sacrifice. The archangel, Michael, who manifested himself as a young knight, saved the city. In a fight without an equal, he beheaded the monster with his sword. Later, Saint Michael fighting the dragon, which was a symbol of evil and injustice, acquired a permanent place on the city arms. Also, there used to be a huge statue of the patron saint at the bottom of the high tower of St. Michaels Church, above the main entrance. For this composition, the hymn tune Laudate Dominum has been chosen as a central musical theme for the archangel. The dragon is reflected in a series of chords that evoke a somewhat ominous association.

This blues, in two movements, pictures the nearly extinct textile industry in the east of the Netherlands. This composition was commissioned for the closing of the bleaching plant in Eibergen in the province of Gelderland. The work starts with a compelling, slow, authentic blues that stands for the bygone textile industry, which gave this region its identity. A fast blues in a jazzy rock style follows in which a renewed identity reflects the optimism for the future. Subsequently, we hear a little predilection for the past (Sing the Blues), but everything works out well in the powerful final chord.

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this old colonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazo's painting "Pacific Dreams". Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrow streets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters around Sydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan of Hawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir. With these ideas and his newly purchased print of "Pacific Dreams", he boards the Metro at Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose! 1. The title for this composition is taken from the "Grounds" which occurred in 16th, 17th and 18th century English keyboard music. In these grounds, the bass and the chord progressions formed the basis for a row of variations. This form of composition was the source of inspiration for Grounds. After the stately and ornamental introduction, the lyrical main theme of the composition follows. This theme forms the basis for a series of variations, in which the focus of the theme is shifted to a climax, after which the composition is brought majestically to a close with the main theme in its original form.

Lithuania, the largest of the three Baltic countries, is blessed with a rich cultural heritage. Although relatively small in terms of territory, Lithuania has five ethnographic regions: _emaitija (Samogitia), Auk_taitija (the Highlands), S_duva, Dz_kija, and Lithuania Minor. Each of these regions is characterized by its own language dialect, folk costumes, customs, crafts, and unique celebrations of seasonal festivals. Most importantly, each region has its own folk songs, some of which have been sung for nearly a thousand years. Composer Jacob de Haan has based The Heart of Lithuania on five folk melodies, which grew to be especially popular in the second half of the 20th century. While all five songs originated in the Auk_taitija region, they are loved throughout Lithuania, and are currently sung by young people in cities, towns, and villages alike. The following songs are featured in this work: Per Klausu_i_ ulyt_l_ (Crossing Klausu_i_ Street) is a song about daily chores and youthful friendships. In the song Augo girioj __uol_lis (The Young Oak Grew in the Forest) a young boy is compared to an oak tree. The father worries, whether his son will grow up to be a soldier or a plowman. Similarly, a young girl is compared to a linden tree. The mother worries, whether her daughter will grow up to be a dancer or a weaver. During the Soviet occupation period, this became an especially popular patriotic song, probably because of the symbolism of the young Lithuanian lad, growing <b>...</b>
