ImpAct is a stylus which can dynamically change its effective length and it is equipped with sensors to calculate its orientation in world coordinates. When a user pushes it against a touch screen, physical stylus shrinks and a rendered projection of the stylus is drawn inside the screen giving the llusion that it submerged into the display device. Once user can see the stylus immersed into the digital world below the screen, he/she can manipulate and interact with the virtual objects with active haptic ensations. Project was developed under masters degree program in Keio Media Design, Keio University, Japan. ImpAct was demonstrated at ACM UIST 2010, NY and to be published in ACM Computers in Entertainment and ACE 2010, Taipei in November 2010.

The unnamed prototype device combines glassless 3D display with a physical feedback system that pushes on a magnetic pen. You hold the stylus pen near the display screen and when virtual objects want to reach out and touch you, you can feel it through forces on the pen. In this demo its a chameleon lashing its tongue out towards the pen causing a vibration. In my case its nearly caused the pen to fly out of my hand. NTT DoCoMo may want to combine their magnetic approach with other haptics. Vibrations for mild touches, solenoids and inductive coils for hard pushes, and heat/cold for those sensations. I'm not the biggest fan of 3D I think the viewing angles are too specific but I couldn't help but share this as the demo was one of the funnest of MWC 2011.
