....and more!!! A very RARE glimpse at the early days of Figure Skating. This is actually the official Figure skating film of the 1924 Winter Olympic Games from Chamonix, France. It was made by Jean de Rovera and is thought to be the first commercially available film of the Olympic Games. There's some speed skating to start and this is followed by Sonja Henie, Herma Plank-Szabo, Gillis Grafstrom, Willy Bockl, Helene Engelmann and Alfred Berger and Charles Sabouret who finished 9th in pairs at this event with Simone Sabouret. I'm not sure if they were married or siblings - probably the latter. It's brief I know and apart from the footage of Henie, which has been featured in various documentaries, the rest has been unseen for many years. I hope you enjoy this precious glimpse into the past.

Most tributes to Sonja Henie has naturally focused on her outstandig career as an iceskater; 10 times a world champion and 3 times Olympic Gold Medalist. I wanna focus on the very fact that she was and remains the most famous Norwegian woman of the 20th century. She was a superstar in her own right and here you`ll see proof of that very fact. I love Hollywood glamour and no one outranked her in that department... Here she is pictured with Don Ameche, Cesar Romero, Ethel Merman(in the 1938 Happy Landing), social functions with Joan Crawford, Romero, Ameche, Peter Lorre, Cole Porter, Clark Gable, King Olav V of Norway and his wife Martha, Harald and Sonja(at the opening of the Henie-Onstad-Arts Center 1968), Marcel Cerdan, Edith Piaf, Donald Duck in The Autograph Hound 1939 and Tyrone Power in the 1937 Thin Ice. She is also pictured with her 3d husband Niels Onstad 1909-1978 as she puts down the foundation stone in what was to be the Henie-Onstad Art Center in 1968 and the grand opening featuring the Norwegian Royal Family. Yeah.... a place over the rainbow must be my beautiful country Norway. Here with images from my family album and the 1969 film "Song of Norway" starring Toralv Maurstad, Florence Henderson and Harry Secombe. A bonus is Sonja Henie in the 1958 "Hello London" and the number is "We Open Again". It was the be the then 46 year old star`s last input on celluloid. I recorded the song on November 13th 2007 and it was orchestrated and played on the piano by the great Lillebror Sande Larsen. His giving as an artist and friend is a treasure to behold.

A LOVE-LETTER TO THE TOWN OF LONDON:-) - a sight-seeing tour from my 2008 trip to London - then - Sonja Henie 1912-1969 in her last film, "Hello London" 1958. In 1997 I met Reidar Børjesen and he told me of his friendship with Sonja and that she planned to make several films like this"(Hello Paris etc). The failure of this film put an end to her plans. However it is nice to see her like this - "singing" an autobiographical song of her life on ice. . This was her last effort on ice and she retired and spent the rest of her life collecting paintings with her third husband Niels Onstad and in 1968 they opened to Henie-Onstad-Art Center right outside Oslo. It`s still there and do pay a visit. The couple is buried there.....Henie died in 1969 and Onstad in 1978... Pictures from my 2008 November trip to London with Norvald and Kjell.
