We recently spent a week in a 2008 Honda Civic GX, the only natural gas vehicle (NGV) available to consumers today, and it didn't take long to appreciate the range and availability of regular ol' gasoline. The Civic GX is rated for combined fuel economy of 28 miles per GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent, an NGV standard), but the tank holds just eight GGE. Leaving room for error, then, you have to refill the GX about every 180 to 200 miles. That wouldn't be as big a problem if compressed natural gas (CNG) were available on every other street corner. The thrust of it, we learned in a typical week of cruising, commuting and grocery shopping, is that you have to plan ahead. The 113-horsepower GX is also slower than traditional Civics, and the extra-large fuel tank eats up all but six cubic feet of trunk space. Still, you can count us in as fans. Our nearby CNG stations are on the pricey side, but we still saved about 30 percent on fuel versus a regular Civic. Factor in solo access to the HOV lane, tax incentives and cleaner emissions, and it's clear why the 2008Civic GX sold out in the first few months of the year. Honda has released the first exclusive photos of the new Civic. The images show the new clean, dynamic and flowing exterior design and high quality interior. The designers of the new Civic wanted to keep the sporty and advanced elements of the car's character but tailor them to communicate the new model's more dynamic feel. Sources of inspiration included a 'blended wing body' aeroplane in which the fuselage and wings blend into a single body for superior aerodynamic performance. Nearly all of the body components on the new Civic have been redesigned with particular focus on ride and handling, reduced CO2 emissions, design and interior quality, while retaining the class-leading cabin, boot space and practicality. Designed and developed specifically for the European market, the new Civic will be offered as a five-door hatchback and will reach UK showrooms in early 2012. The new Honda Civic will be launched today at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA).

When large, truck-based SUVs collide with passenger cars or minivans, the results can be devastating for the occupants of the latter. But fatalities in such accidents are on the decrease in the United States thanks to measures employed by automakers. Traffic deaths are down 64 percent since the year 2000 due to changes in automobile design such as lower bumpers for SUVs and better-protect cabin cells for passenger cars. In 2000, the death rate for car and minivan passengers in collisions with trucks or SUVs was 44 deaths per million. That came down to 16 deaths per million by 2009. The study was conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a private-sector group based in Arlington, Virginia. "By working together, the automakers got life-saving changes done quickly," said Joe Nolan, the institute's chief administrative officer.

Interior and boot space remains the same across the range. Honda reserves the three-door style for the sportier Type S and the high-performance Type R; the most economical 1.4-litre diesel versions are only available with five doors. When Honda launched the current Civic family hatchback, its futuristic styling caused quite a stir. The three-door version is only available in sporty Type S trim or in Type R guise - the latter a hugely exciting high performance hatchback with a loud and powerful 2.0-litre petrol engine.
