San Francisco biologists say parasite flies are turning honeybees into zombie slaves. Dr. John Hafernik explains his findings to San Francisco's KGO-TV. "'Look at it, there were all these little brown pupae in it. I knew they were flies.' That is when the doctor knew he made an accidental discovery. 'These were indicating there's a fly coming out of these bees.' ... 'Discovery, basically there was nothing left inside the bee.' The cycle begins once a fertile fly finds a bee, and uses an appendage called the ovipositor to penetrate the body and lay eggs, which eventually hatch inside as maggots -- lots of maggots, according to the research team." Deadly parasite turns Bay Area honeybees into zombie slaves
San Francisco biologists have made a macabre discovery that might help explain the mysterious crash of honeybee populations: parasites that turn bees into zombies. Infected bees go mad, abandoning their hive in a suicidal rush toward bright lights, according to a new study by San Francisco State researchers. "It's the flight of the living dead," said lead investigator and biology professor John Hafernik, also president of the California Academy of Sciences. The parasite, a tiny fly, has been found in bees from three-quarters of the 31 surveyed hives in the Bay Area -- essentially, everywhere except Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. In a plotline similar to a George Romero horror film, the fly deposits its eggs into the bee's abdomen, then takes over. The hapless bees walk around in circles, with no apparent sense of direction. WARNING: Language, cursing and general bad behavior. My dad-in-law was heavily medicated following surgery earlier that day and wanted to install a package of bees. He was all dirty from falling in the mud. Camera boy went into full freak out mode once the bees were released and dad got stung repeatedly because... well, who knows? I think because he forgot to spray his bees with sugar water or maybe they were just an aggressive bunch. Dad was supposed to bee inside resting but wanted to help. It ended up in disaster but somehow we got the bees in the boxes. After this filming I was able to correct his hive and then reposition my queen onto my frame correctly.
