In my search for traces of my Iranian heritage, my trip to the West of China had become irresistible! I decided to undertake this journey, as an "One Man Crew" filmmaker, despite many obstacles. When my external drive crashed and my only copy of my film, "Another Salute!" was lost,(Behrouz Vossoughi and Khosrow Shakibaie) I felt overwhelmed as I was one month late in preparing for the 3rd Noor Film Festival, already. I had a window of only two days to celebrate and film the Iranian New Year (Nowruz). Feelings of family obligation weighed on my mind, as it was also my wedding anniversary, and my birthday. In addition, I had no financial support--as all the organizations I thought would support me in this cultural quest, abandoned me. As the day of my departure arrived, only three hours before my flight, I was informed that the direct buses from Teda to Beijing were not available any more. I had to get to the airport in any way possible and on time. (9 Minutes)

Performed by Pianist Tara Kamangar 21 June 2009 National Gallery of Art, Washington DC www.tarakamangar.com AMINOLLAH HOSSEIN was born in 1905 in Ashkabad, Iran. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Russia, due to their persecution in Iran as members of the Baha'i faith. As a child, Hossein learned to play the tar (a traditional Iranian instrumenent similar to the lute) from his mother, and fell in love with music. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Hossein moved to Germany (Stuttgart) to study medicine on the insistence of his father, and simultaneously studied the piano with Artur Schnabel. In 1927, he moved to Paris, where he was to remain for the rest of his life. He became the first Iranian to enter the Paris Conservatory, studying composition and orchestration under Paul Vidal. Hossein's first work, his ballet "Toward the Light," was performed in 1938 at the Paris Opera House. His later ballets, "Persian Miniatures" and "Scheherezade" were choreographed by George Skibine, one of Diaghilev's dancers. His other orchestrated works include the Symphony of the Sands (1946), the Persepolis Symphony (1947), the Arya Symphony (1976), and three piano concertos. He also composed twenty film scores--mostly for films directed by his son, the famed French actor and director Robert Hossein—using the pseudonym "Andre Gosselain". He died in Paris in 1983. This past year, Hossein's Persepolis Symphony was performed and recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and several <b>...</b>

On Friday, March 14, 2008, pianist Tara Kamangar was the featured soloist with the Oakland East Bay Symphony at the Paramount Theatre. The concert, "Notes from Persia," coincided with the Persian New Year and celebrated the music of this region with rarely performed works by Persian composers and two brilliant works from the Western classical tradition. Ms. Kamangar, who recently completed her postgraduate studies in piano performance at London's Royal Academy of Music, is shown here performing Piano Concerto No. 2 by Aminollah Hossein. Michael Morgan conducts the orchestra.

This is a poem by Hossein Panahi, and in his own voice. It is a part of an album which was recorded not long before he died (it is believed that he committed suicide although it was announced on tv that he died of heart failure!). The album was published few months after his death. The album is called Salam-Khodahafez (Hello-Goodbye). Hossein Panahi was an actor, a poet, and was greatly known for his philosophical views. He was greatly influenced by Sadegh Hedayat.
