IELTS Speaking Test Practice - Adult English School

www.ieltspracticetests.com IELTS speaking practice test preparation example video featuring Rae and James from Adult English School. This IELTS speaking practice test gives you an idea of what a real IELTS test might be like. It features questions that students have actually been asked in the real exam. This paragraph was updated in 2012 to tell you that another student had similar questions to these recently, so they're still being asked! Please note in the real IELTS test your voice is recorded and at the second stage you are given a card, blank paper and a pencil. In the video James hands Rae his IELTS speaking questions sheet. Also, in the real exam, the IELTS examiner has a huge folder of questions to refer to. You can't hope to learn them all! Rae scored 7 in the IELTS exam around the time of the video. As the exam has been made harder in recent years, if she was to sit the exam now at the level in this older video she would be more likely to score a 6.5! (Rae got a job in Sydney soon after and has a speaking level closer to 9 now.) So, to increase your English speaking skills quickly 1. Move to a country where only English is spoken (avoid communities of non-natives until after the exam) 2. Stop speaking your native language to your friends and family until after the exam. (Prioritise! Your friends and family should understand your goals) 3. Only read, write and think in English (that even includes short notes to yourself like 'buy soap' or 'call James' and ...

Also check out our new IELTS writing app on iTunes - http NARRATION: In this IELTS writing course you will find a number of different lessons that will help you improve your academic writing. In this lesson, we will look at some of the basic points you need to consider. Let's look back at the bad paragraph you saw at the beginning of this lesson. The first rule of academic writing is that you should avoid contractions such as don't and hadn't. Writing the complete word such as do not is better academically, and also adds an extra word to your word count. The second point for academic writing is that you should avoid using phrasal verbs such as give up. A phrasal verb is created when using a verb and another word together to create a particular meaning. It would be much better in this example to use a word like 'concede'. Academic writing also means that you should avoid emphasising with capital letters or being too direct. Using a word like stupid for example, will definitely lower your academic presentation. You should also avoid emphasising with exclamation marks. Although you may be asked for an opinion in academic writing, you are not being asked to show emotion and your writing should remain formal at all times ...

Also check out our new IELTS writing app on iTunes - http NARRATION: One of the biggest problems in the IELTS reading test is time. You have one hour to answer 40 questions, which means that you will have to be able to get the information you need quickly. There are three different skills you will need in the test. Skimming, scanning and reading in detail. Skimming means looking quickly at the passage to get a general idea of what it is about. Scanning means looking at the passage for specific information. Reading in detail requires you to carefully read the section of the passage you are looking for the answer in. Here are some common situations in which you have probably already used these skills. You might skim a newspaper article to see if you think it is interesting enough to read. If you were looking for a telephone number in a directory, you would scan, looking for the specific information you need. If you are assembling a complicated product, you would need to read the instruction manual carefully to make sure you understand all the details of what you have to do. Skimming and scanning skills will help you find the right section of the reading passage to answer the question. Most questions will then require you ...

IELTS reading - understanding unknown vocabulary

Visit www.IELTStestONLINE.com for our complete online study course, including reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary lessons, as well as essential academic skills like punctuation, linking words and up to 12 complete practice tests. Also check out our new IELTS writing app on iTunes - http NARRATION: A common difficulty in the IELTS reading test is when you find a word that you do not recognise. Many candidates make the mistake of spending some considerable time reading the word and the sentence it is in trying to understand what it means. This, of course, takes valuable time and may not necessarily improve your result. However, there are seven different points that you could consider to help you deal with unknown vocabulary. The first point is that, on occasion, you will find that the reading passage has a glossary at the end, describing two or three of the key words. If there is a glossary, then you should make sure to read it carefully, as if it was important enough to give you a glossary, then the words are probably required for one or more of your answers. If there is no glossary or it doesn't explain the word you were looking at, another point to consider is whether it begins with a capital letter or is in italics. If it starts with a capital letter, then the word is probably a proper noun, for example a place or a person's name. If the word is in italics, it is probably a technical word which you are not expected to know. Here are some ...

How to approach the IELTS reading test

Also check out our new IELTS writing app on iTunes - http NARRATION: To improve the speed at which you can complete an IELTS reading test, it is important that you have a clear plan about how you are going to approach the test. The skills you need to effectively answer the questions have just been mentioned - skimming, scanning and reading for detail. However, how you use these skills will determine how effective they are. When the test begins, you should first look at the title of the reading passage if it has one, and any illustrations that may be given. These may give you an indication of what the passage is about. Next, skim the question types - you are not aiming for a 100% understanding of everything, just enough to know what type of questions you will need to answer. Third, skim the reading passage. Again, you are not looking to understand the entire passage - just enough to answer the question 'what is it about?'. Then you go back to the questions, use the skills we will present in this course for each particular question type and then scan for the answers using keywords, synonyms or rephrases. Once you have found the relevant section of the passage, you then need to read for detail to confirm your answer. The ...

Evaluating a student's written IELTS essay (part 1 of 8)

Here is the IELTS essay question that I submitted to the student: In many countries, the proportion of older people is steadily increasing. Does this trend have more positive or negative effects on society? And here is the student's entire essay from start to finish (uncorrected): Today, older people make up an increasing proportion of our population. This is very clear in the government statistics, that, the inhabitants aged 50 and over has grown in the last 3 decades. It is believed that aged people has a negative effects on society. This will be proven by analyzing one of the way that retired people spend their money as they are more likely to be providing unpaid care. On these days, we can see that there are a lots gambling shops that are usually busy of aged people. As older people are retired, the pension money that they normally get are spent in betting shops. This example makes clear where retired people are more interested. Thus, there is an obvious link between aged people and a unhappy society. As funded home care services has fallen, the over 50s/60s probably will not get paid care in the next few years. This is very apparent that the government will not have the money to pay for the health care services. It is obvious that the society will be affected. After analyzing the areas of older people hobbies and the lack of the government funding to pay aged people care, it is clear that the only factor that will be affected and will have negative effects is the ...

About IELTS The English Language Testing System

What is IELTS and what English language skills does it test? Most prospective students know that they need to have a certain IELTS score, usually 6 - 6.5, to get into a university in countries like Canada, Britain, Australia or the USA, or they know that they have to sit the exam if they want to work or migrate to one of these countries. But very often they do not know what the exam itself involves or which English language skills are going to be tested. I recently caught up with Michael Fay, a senior Australian education consultant with the ASEAN focus group and one-time director of INSEARCH at the University of Technology. Michael not only has extensive experience in providing IELTS courses but is also an IELTS Examiner himself - an ideal person to advise you on what the examination contains and how it is used by educational institutions and governments to determine your English language level.
