India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle [GSLV] - ISRO report

The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle [GSLV] is currently being developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation [ISRO]. On successful completion of the programme, India would become self-sufficient in launching heavy, commercial, communication satellites from its own soil as well as being able to do the same for other nations. It is also to launch India's second mission to the Moon, Chandrayaan-2. India also operates the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle [PSLV], developed for launching smaller-sized, lighter satellites and placing them in the desired orbit -- sun synchronous or geostationary. It has an extremely high success rate, having performed 17 consecutive successful launches & has placed a total of 41 satellites in orbit, including one in which it put in orbit 10 satellites in a single launch -- a world record. After Agni V, India successfully launched its own spy satellite RISAT-1 on Thursday morning from Sriharikota. RISAT-1 can deliver crystal clear pictures in all weather conditions. The indigenous Risat-1 - which stands for Radar Imaging Satellite - has a lifespan of five years and will be used for disaster prediction and agriculture forestry. RISAT's high resolution pictures and microwave imaging could also be used for defence purposes. India now joins Japan, Europe, Canada and Israel to boast of such technology. Weighing at 1528 Kg, RISAT-1 is the heaviest satellite ever launched by India.

ISRO PSLV-C17 rocket Launched GSAT-12 satellite

July 15, 2011 - Satish Dhawan Space Center. India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C17) successfully launched GSAT-12 communication satellite today (July 15, 2011) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota. The launch of PSLV-C17 was the eighteenth successive successful flight of PSLV. After a smooth countdown of 53 hours, the vehicle lifted-off from the Second Launch Pad at the opening of the launch window at 16:48 hrs (IST). After about 20 minutes of flight time, GSAT-12 was successfully injected into sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (sub-GTO) with a perigee of 284 km and an apogee of 21020 km with an orbital inclination of 17.9 deg. The preliminary flight data indicates that all major flight events involving stage ignition and burnouts, performance of solid and liquid stages, indigenously developed advanced mission computers and telemetry systems have performed well. ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC)'s ground station at Biak, Indonesia acquired the signals from GSAT-12 immediately after the injection of the satellite. The solar panels of the satellite were deployed automatically. Initial checks on the satellite have indicated normal health of the satellite.

TV9 - ISRO SUFFERS MAJOR SET BACK - GSAT-5P EXPLODES MID-AIR

SRIHARIKOTA: ISRO's space programme suffered a major setback on Saturday as the launch of advanced communication satellite GSAT-5P failed due to major technical fault in the first phase. The rocket geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) exploded mid-air moments after it took off from the Sriharikota rocket launch centre. The satellite GSAT-5P was expected to serve the needs of the telecommunication sector and the weather department and would have eventually replaced the INSAT-2E satellite that was sent up in 1999. It weighed 2130 kg and the cost of its production was around Rs 125 crore. The GSAT-5P satellite had a life span of over 13 years and had 36 transponders - automatic receivers and transmitters for communication and broadcast of signals.
