Italians protest against pension reforms

Thousands of unemployed people and pensioners have demonstrated in Rome to send the government an ultimatum against cutting pensions and affecting workers' rights. Most of those who had gathered in the capital were workers who accepted an early retirement package, thinking they would receive their pension soon after leaving the job. Prime Minister Mario Monti then raised the retirement age, and they now say they live in limbo, without either a salary nor a pension. Al Jazeera's Claudio Lavanga reports from Rome.

Chinese-run sweatshops anger Italy's workers

Chinese factories in Italy are not only driving the "fast fashion" industry of cheap goods, but pushing Italians out of an industry that has historically been identified with them. Italians prepare for austerity

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has promised to resign once austerity measures are put in place. The government has been slow to take dramatic action on the economy, a reluctance which has led to the current crisis. The political uncertainty and fears about the country's debt is pushing its borrowing costs to record highs - leading to more concerns about the economy. Al Jazeera's Tania Page reports from Rome on how plans to tackle the country's debt are affecting those who'll pay for it.

Profile: New Italian PM, Mario Monti

He is the man Italians are hoping will help get the country out of its $2.7 trillion debt hole and kick-start its stagnant economy. Mario Monti, Italy's new prime minister, is tasked with leading a new unity government and guiding Italy through tough austerity measures laid out by his predecessor, Silvio Berlusconi. Known as a calm but tough negotiator, Monti was the European Union's competition commissioner for four years, between 1999 to 2004 when, notably, he brought Microsoft to trial before the European Court of Justice in an anti-trust case. Monti was also professor of economics at Bocconi University in Milan, one of Italy's top economic schools and has held positions at various think tanks, as well as acting as an advisor to companies including Goldman Sachs and Coca-Cola. Yet Monti's appointment as prime minister marks his first job in government, with Italy not due to hold elections for another two years. Al Jazeera's Richard Martin reports.

Italy National anthem Italian & English lyrics

" Fratelli d italia" Il Canto degli Italiani (The Chant of the Italians) is the Italian national anthem. It is best known among Italians as L'Inno di Mameli (Mameli's Hymn) and often referred to as Fratelli d'Italia (Brothers of Italy), from its opening line. The words were written in the autumn of 1847 in Genoa, by the then 20-year-old student and patriot Goffredo Mameli, in a climate of popular struggle for unification and independence of Italy which foreshadowed the war against Austria. Two months later, they were set to music in Turin by another Genoese, Michele Novaro. The hymn enjoyed widespread popularity throughout the period of the Risorgimento and in the following decades. After unification (1861) the adopted national anthem was the Marcia Reale, the Royal March (or Fanfara Reale), official hymn of the royal house of Savoy composed in 1831 to order of Carlo Alberto di Savoia. The Marcia Reale remained the Italian national anthem until the birth of the republic. Giuseppe Verdi, in his Inno delle Nazioni (Hymn of the Nations), composed for the London International Exhibition of 1862, chose Il Canto degli Italiani and not the Marcia Reale to represent Italy, putting it beside God Save the Queen and the Marseillaise. In 1946 Italy became a republic, and on October 12, 1946, Il Canto degli Italiani was provisionally chosen as the country's new national anthem. This choice was made official in law only on November 17, 2005, almost 60 years later. English translation ...

The Italian Solution - Italy

August 2009 Thanks to strict new laws turning unauthorised migration into a criminal offence and a controversial deal with Libya, Italy is cracking down on immigration. Tough but necessary or just plain racist? Look at them - ugly mugs! a citizen patrol group is targeting immigrants. Groups like these are now legal and meant to help the police fight drug dealers. Some residents are sceptical: We should integrate those people, not hunt them down. But others welcome the new laws. No more Mr Nice guy, were fed up! Negative press has turned immigration into a devil in the publics eye but it seems Italians no longer need to fear: the government has closed the gateway to Europe. Libya is preventing migrants from leaving and Italy's pushing back boats intercepted near Lampedusa. The need for political asylum is not considered. Most drastically, doctors are now obliged to report migrants without documents to the authorities. I think it's a stupid law, says this MSF doctor, almost all of us will take no notice.

The Truth About Italian DNA

Italians are the descendants of the great Italics and Romans, and are still basically the same as 2 and 3 thousand years ago. But some mixtures did happen. Italians are genetically the most gifted and amazing and blessed of all nationalities on the planet, with a sweet Italic base, and some Nordic flavors, as well as other areas...from Italic, Roman, Greek, Arabic, German, Celtic, Norman, etc...and having a number of haplogroups (same DNA characteristic groupings). Italians have some of the same blood and genes that Norwegians, Vikings, Germans, Scots, and Welsh have. As well as Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and Byzantines. That the native Italic genes absorbed. Amazing variations. Are Italians (overall) the most physically attractive people on earth? Here's the case, the scientific facts, as well as the photographic evidence....see what's what.

Uprising - Muse make fun of an italian tv show in this "live" performance - hilarious!

READ THE DESCRIPTION: The rock band was forced to play in playback during an italian tv show about football "Quelli che il Calcio". So Muse decided to exchange their instruments and positions. The singer became a drummer, the drummer sang and played bass, and the guy who usually play the bass played guitar and keyboard. Nobody (in the tv show) noticed the difference. Futhermore at the end of that fantastic performance the hostess interviewed the drummer that still acting like the singer talked about his friend matthew at the drum (he his the real singer). PS. sorry for not perfect english and remember that not all italians are ignorant and egocentric like the staff of that show

Time Shift - Italian Noir: The Story of Italian Crime Fiction

Documentary which profiles a new wave of Italian crime fiction that has emerged to challenge the conventions of the detective novel. There are no happy endings in these noir tales, only revelations about Italy's dark heart - a world of corruption, unsolved murders and the mafia. The programme features exclusive interviews with the leading writers from this new wave of noir, including Andrea Camilleri (creator of the Inspector Montablano Mysteries) and Giancarlo De Cataldo (Romanzo Criminale), who explains how his work as a real-life investigating judge inspired his work. From the other side of the law, Massimo Carlotto talks about how his novels were shaped by his wrongful conviction for murder and years spent on the run from the police. The film also looks at the roots of this new wave. Carlo Emilio Gadda (That Awful Mess) used the detective novel to expose the corruption that existed during Mussolini's fascist regime and then, after the Second World War, Leonardo Sciascia's crime novels (The Day of The Owl) tackled the rise of the Sicilian mafia. These writers established the rules of a new kind of noir that drew on real events and offered no neat endings. Also featuring Italian writers Carlo Lucarelli and Barbara Baraldi, the film uses rarely seen archive from Italian television. Production : BBC Four

Hollywood's Italian Stereotypes - A Century of No Progress - part of Galleria Italica

Stereotypes about Italians abound in Hollywood films, even to this day. This video is a short documentary that illustrates our main points about Hollywood's continuing mistreatment of Italian Americans. Presented by StereoTypeThis! www.stereotypethis.com The video includes excerpts of recent ignominious films and summarizes the results of a survey conducted by the Italic Institute of America http Please be advised that some of the excerpts contain strong language and possibly offensive scenes - such is Hollywood's approach to "realism." The full survey, detailed on the Italic Institute of America's site, concluded that out of 1233 Italian-related films since the sound era (1928), 69% portray Italians in a negative light, ie, as mobsters, boors, buffoons, bigots or bimbos. This video is part of the Galleria Italica series of videos presented by the Italic Institute of America.
