Ok, so they *featured* in *that* 3x Academy Award winning film. ;) But nonetheless, I don't think any trip to Japan is complete without seeing this amazing landmark! A few weeks into my homestay, I somehow hinted that I wanted to go here haha...so, Okaasan (host mother), Otousan (host father) and I headed off to the 'place of a thousand gates' to tick it off my life's 'To Do list' :D You may notice that I wasn't really confident with Japanese at this point... even though I have studied it for 7 years :O But living with a host family, and just being in Japan helps incredibly, and I can honestly say I reached a level of Japanese I never could have learning it on my own in Australia (mainly because studying isn't an activity I particularly enjoy :P). Part 1 - This is Fushimi Inari-Tasha: "Inari" is the God of rice, but is also seen as the patron of business, en.wikipedia.org so during the Japanese New Year and at the first of every month people flock to this Shrine from all over Japan to pray for the prosperity of their businesses. I have personally been to many shrines and temples around Japan and I must say that I did notice a difference in the attire of the attendees of this shrine. Japan is a hardworking country with countless businesses, so the business attire of those at the shrine wasn't lost on me. You see more nice suits, and well-dressed groups of people male and female. I don't believe the people are trying to be flashy or cool, they are just wearing their best business attire to attend the shrine, because the Japanese New Year is also a festive time, and a time of new hope for the year. Business and "The Company" is very serious here in Japan, so I also saw large groups of salarymen obviously all from the same company walking together up the long stairways up the mountain and praying at the smaller shrines. This is one of the most famous shrines in Japan, and is visited as you can see in the video by literally thousands of people a day. However that isn't a bad thing if you don't like crowds. If you are coming from a western country you will be happy to know that here in Japan being in a crowded place can be very comfortable. There is no pushing or shoving. Went to Kyoto during the weekend to see some more sights! Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) is the place with probably thousands of red Torii. Walking the entire path will take around 2 hours, which I did not do xD.... after that I went to Nanzenji (南禅寺) to see the aqueduct. I was quite eager to see that because I haven't seen one since I've been to Europe... and it was quite odd seeing an ancient western structure in Japan. PS. The Tofu ice cream tasted really good! Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社?) is the head shrine of Inari, located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The shrine sits at the base of a mountain also named Inari, and includes trails up the mountain to many smaller shrines. Our sweet little female arctic fox Inari passed away after a fight with Christmas. We don't know what they were fighting about but they were both torn up pretty bad. Inari didn't make it through the night and Christmas had to have surgery. After the surgery we learned Christmas has a hormonal inbalance which is what led to his unusual behavior. The poor fox didn't understand what he did and has been looking for Inari since she died. It's a very sad and unexepcted thing to see the two of them so happy and loving and then go to this. The loss of Inari is heartbreaking but to watch Christmas feeling so sad is even worse. As I put this video together Christmas is lying in a crate next to me recovering from his surgery. We have to keep him inside to keep pests away and keep his injuries clean, which is even harder on him because he just wants to go back to normal. I heard the song in this video "Things Left Unsaid" by Disciple for the first time a few weeks ago and it seemed the most fitting song for how I feel. It's hard to understand how quickly and drastically things can change. There are parts where the song matched up almost perfectly with the video clips which was kind of cool, but made it so much harder for me to watch. I've got my fingers crossed Christmas willl pull through and I hope wherever Inari is she's happy.
