Google Tech Talks April, 15 2008 ABSTRACT The recent increase in demand for 3D content, for a wide variety of purposes, has led to a corresponding increase in the number and diversity of people using 3D modeling software. It has also amplified the pressure to deliver 3D models on tight budgets, and at pace. These combined pressures have driven an increase in the sophistication of 3D modelling software, but also a new focus on its usability. VideoTrace represents a significant change in the way 3D models are made, and exemplifies a new kind of interface design. The VideoTrace user sketches the shape they require over a frame of a video sequence, and automated image analysis techniques generate the model. The interface is thus intuitive, and easy to use, but supported by strong mathematical analysis. It allows unskilled users to achieve models that would be impossible using more conventional modelling software, and skilled users to dramatically improve their accuracy and productivity. HoloDesk is a novel interactive system combining an optical see through display and Kinect camera to create the illusion that users are directly interacting with 3D graphics. A virtual image of a 3D scene is rendered through a half silvered mir- ror and spatially aligned with the real-world for the viewer. Users easily reach into an interaction volume displaying the virtual image. This allows the user to literally get their hands into the virtual display. A novel real-time algorithm for rep- resenting hands and other physical objects, which are sensed by the Kinect inside this volume, allows physically realistic interaction between real and virtual 3D objects.

Detailed 3D visual models of indoor spaces, from walls and floors to objects and their configurations, can provide extensive knowledge about the environments as well as rich contextual information of people living therein. Vision-based 3D modeling has only seen limited success in applications, as it faces many technical challenges that only a few experts understand, let alone solve. In this work we utilize (Kinect style) consumer depth cameras to enable non-expert users to scan their personal spaces into consistent 3D models. We build a prototype mobile system for 3D modeling that runs in real-time on a laptop, assisting and interacting with the user on-the-fly. Color and depth are jointly used to achieve robust 3D registration. The system offers online feedback and hints, tolerates human errors and alignment failures, and helps to obtain complete coverage of the scenes. We show that our prototype system can both scan large environments (40 meters across) and at the same time preserve fine details (centimeter accuracy). The capability of detailed 3D modeling leads to many promising applications such as accurate 3D localization, measuring dimensions, and interactive visualization.

Simon Greenwold from MIT Media Lab aesthetics and computation group developed a new concept for creating an easy to use combination of real and virtual environments. Using what he calls a "window" (a large portable touch sensitive screen) equipped with a high res digital camera in the back, he created a device which captures a real environment and let the user add fixed virtual three dimensional objects inside it using a simple stylus input device.

Happy birthday to a near and dear friend Kyoushiro. I wanted to make this walkthrough in dedication to her for all of the help and support she has given me since the early days of YouTube before anybody knew I existed. =P Plus I wanted to do this anyways so that kills two birds with one stone. Some major things to point out. This walkthrough is not going to be laid out the way I normally do things. Due to the way the main game is played, I have decided to make this an interactive styled walkthrough. It will take a few days before I can actually put in useful annotations but this is a learning experience for me as usual so feedback is always appreciated. Experience "3 Dreams of Black" at www.ro.me "3 Dreams of Black" is Chris Milk's new interactive film, created in WebGL with some friends from Google, for Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi's ROME, featuring Jack White & Norah Jones. The project is a Chrome Experiment (www.chromeexperiments.com that showcases some of the latest web technologies in modern browsers like Google Chrome. In building "3 Dreams of Black", we've had the opportunity to build many tools, libraries, and models. We've fully opened up the source code and made it available for web developers to tinker with us at www.ro.me In addition to the code, a few other highlights include eight WebGL demos, a fun model viewer for interacting with some of the animals from the web experience, and the Three.js 3D library used for building the experience. In addition, a big part of the project was to define a good pipeline for getting all the animals and environment models right in WebGL -- for this, we extended Blender with custom plugins so we could manipulate and export the data with ease.
