An Iranian warplane has spotted a US aircraft carrier during Tehran's ongoing navy drill in the Persian Gulf, reports IRNA news agency. The US fleet's maneuvers come after Iran threatened to block the oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran's surveillance jet has shot a video and pictures of the American carrier, which was later identified as John C. Stennis. The US Fifth Fleet keeps a military base in Bahrain, while the ship was spotted in the Gulf of Oman after crossing the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state TV also showed images of the Iranian exercise, which is taking place in international waters near the Strait of Hormuz - the passageway for one-sixth of the world's oil supply. Confrontation Iran's New Naval Exercise to Coincide With US Israeli Drill

thinkprogress.org Iran's saber rattling is far from over as it scheduled new naval exercises near the Strait of Hormuz, a major choke point for the world's oil tankers. The exercise comes on the heels of 10 days of maneuvers that started last month and included the firing of cruise missiles, which could be used against commercial tankers as well as against US Navy ships that operate in the Persian Gulf to ensure unhindered passage of tankers.

US aircraft carriers to deliver 'direct message to Iran'

Europe and the US have expressed their willingness to return to talks with Iran over its controversial nuclear program. But despite that, the EU is seemingly still set to approve an embargo on Iranian oil. France even says the time to avoid military intervention is running out. As for the US, this week it strengthened its presence in the region by sending a second aircraft carrier to the Arabian sea. It's reportedly planning to sail through the Strait of Hormuz which Iran has threatened to block in response to sanctions. Iran's Velayat-90 naval drill enters 5th day

Uploaded by: www.facebook.com Iran's naval forces exercised sea mine clearing on the fifth day of their massive military wargames underway in the international waters of the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean on Wednesday. Iran's naval forces started massive wargames, dubbed as Velayat 90, in an area stretching from the East of the Strait of Hormoz in the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Aden on Saturday. "The exercise for destroying floating mines was carried out by the Navy's RH choppers in the Velayat 90 wargames general zone," Commander of the Air Units of the Iranian Navy Captain Alireza Nayeri told reporters. He stated that the exercise is aimed at providing safe passage for the navy vessels, adding that the mine clearing phase will be continued by the Navy's RH, SH and AB helicopters to the end of the 10-day wargames. On Tuesday and on the fourth day of the naval wargames, the Iranian Navy started the tactical phase of the military exercises. Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Navy Admiral Seyed Mahmoud Moussavi, who is also spokesman of the wargames, said that Iranian navy vessels embarked on laying mines for fortifying the country's coastal waters to prevent infiltration of hypothetical enemy vessels and submarines. english.farsnews.com

The Second day of the third phase of the drills dubbed Defenders of Velayat Sanctuaries 3 started on Wednesday September 14. Planes were dispatched from around the country to Shahid Fakouri military airbase and test ammunition was used in the first and second phases. Live ammunition was used in the third phase. F-4, F-5 and Sukhoi 24 successfully destroyed various dummy mobile and fixed targets on the first day. The maneuvers are a great opportunity for instructors to see how their trainees perform and they were happy. Iranian Pilots believe that these war games are different than previous ones. Like the first day of the third phase, two exercises will be conducted on the second day. The first exercise involved Saeqe jet fighters a product of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force and the Iranian Ministry of Defense. The second stage of the third day F7 fighters put on an impressive performance. Iran had never displayed its F7s in any previous maneuvers. Electronic warfare were also tested. The extensive aerial military exercises have been designed to simulate a real war zone for the pilots as opposed to previous aerial competitions Military officials here say that MIG 29s and C130 tactical transportation planes will both participate in complex exercises in the last day of the 3rd phase of the drill.

"Transferring the experiences of the Sacred Defense [Iran's eight-year war with Iraq] to the new generation and young officers and practicing tactical strategies of [the IRGC] ground forces in various combat sections of asymmetrical warfare are other goals of the Shohaday-e Vahdat drills," he added. Pakpour said the IRGC would use some of its tactical capabilities and innovations during the drills. Noting that the exercise also aims to increase the readiness of IRGC forces under extreme climatic conditions, the commander said, "Shohaday-e Vahdat maneuvers are taking place in Khaf where the temperature drops 15-21 degrees below zero." Lord Ivan Canas: Watch Iran Military exercise near Turkey - Please read the 'more info' section.

20th-10-2008 Tehran flexes muscles at NATO Iran says it's carried out the second phase of a military exercise near its border with Turkey. The location is significant due to its proximity to NATO bases inside Turkey. Iran's Air Force includes American Fs, Russian-made Sukhoi and Iranian Saeghehs aircraft. Our fighter jets took off from various bases around the country and went to the drill area, said Hussein Jet Farushan, an Iranian military spokesman. Signal interception and jamming equipment was also used as well as unmanned jets that are now in mass production in Iran. Military experts believe the operation is aimed at showing the world and the US in particular Iran's military might. What we see is a result of the US presence in the region. It's prompted a leap in quality of Irans missile and aviation sectors, said Amir Al-Mussui, a military expert. It's perhaps no surprise that the Air Force hits were conducted from the city of Tabriz which lies near the border with Turkey - in close proximity to NATO military bases.

Confusion Caused by Military Drill Rattles Markets: Alex Jones Tuesday Edition

False Rumor That Strait of Hormuz Was Closed Sends Oil Prices Skyrocketing Paul Joseph Watson www.infowars.com www.prisonplanet.tv Tuesday, December 13, 2011 A rumor that Iran had closed the Strait of Hormuz sent oil prices skyrocketing today, but the story turned out to be inaccurate and was likely a result of confusion surrounding an upcoming Iranian military drill set to take place near the key oil choke point. As we reported yesterday, an Iranian MP went public with the claim that Iran was about to stage a military drill to practice closing the Strait of Hormuz, after which the Iranian military declined to comment. Earlier today, the Tehran Times confirmed that Iran was preparing to "practice its ability to close the Strait of Hormuz." A report out of real-time analysts Ransquawk then claimed that the channel had in fact already been closed, a rumor that sent traders scrambling. "By 10:40 am EDT oil had jumped from $98.590 before the rumor, to $101.25 at its peak, and has settled to $100.30 — still sitting almost $2 higher than before the supposition began," reports Business Insider. At time of press, prices have settled to around $99 dollars a barrel. Other reports confirm that the Strait was not closed at any point. Iran's Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the Strait is open, reports Bloomberg. In addition, Ransquawk now reports that the US fifth fleet has confirmed maritime traffic in the Strait is normal.
