Barney Kessel is the only white performer in the film. He was seated in the shadows to shade his skin, and for closeups, his hands were stained with berry juice. The movie was directed by Gjon Mili. RARE OLDIES SOUNDIES WITH THE DE CASTRO SISTERS ! The DeCastro Sisters were a female singing group: they consisted of Peggy, Cherie and Babette DeCastro. (When Babette retired in 1958, a cousin, Olgita DeCastro Marino replaced her.) In 1945, the DeCastro family moved to the United States from Cuba. The sisters became protegees of Carmen Miranda, and formed a singing trio in Miami, Florida. They had a style something like the then-popular Andrews Sisters, but with a Latin flavor. The biggest hit single for the group was "Teach Me Tonight," in 1954. The song hit #2 in the United States, and the follow-up, "Boom Boom Boomerang" . Peggy, the eldest of the group, died 6 March 2004 of lung cancer at age 82. Olgita died on 14 February 2000 at age 65. Sir George Shearing, (born August 13, 1919) is an Anglo-American jazz pianist who for many years led a popular jazz group which recorded for MGM Records and Capitol Records. The composer of over 300 titles, he has had multiple albums on the Billboard charts during the 1950s, 1960s, 1980s and 1990s. He became known for a piano technique known as Shearing's voicing, a type of double melody block chord, with an additional fifth part that doubles the melody an octave lower. Shearing's interest in classical music resulted in some performances with concert orchestras in the 1950s and 1960s, and his solos frequently draw upon the music of Debussy and, particularly, Erik Satie for inspiration. Calloway was a master of energetic scat singing and led one of the United States' most popular African American big bands from the start of the 1930s through the late 1940s. Calloway's band featured performers including trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Adolphus "Doc" Cheatham, saxophonists Ben Webster and Leon "Chu" Berry, New Orleans guitar ace Danny Barker, and bassist Milt Hinton. RARE OLDIES SOUNDIES WITH THE DINNING SISTERS ! The Dinning Sisters were a very popular trio vocal group which personified the swinging, close harmony sounds of the era. Sister Lou, born in 1922 in Kentucky, joined forces with her twin sisters Ginger , and Jean, both born in 1924 in Oklahoma. There were five daughters and four sons total in the musical family, and all sang in the church choir. While in their teens the three Dinning sisters had won several amateur singing contests, and were awarded a 15-minute local radio show. Later they toured as part of Herbie Holmes orchestra. In 1939 they received a five-year contract with NBC in Chicago, and were regular guests on such shows as Gary Moores "Club Matinee", the "Bowman Musical Milkwagon," and the "National Barn Dance." They appeared at several clubs in the Chicago area , and even were featured in the Latin Quarter. They were the highest paid radio act in Chicago at the time.
