Marvin Gaye "What's Going On / What's Happening Brother"

An excerpt from the recently released DVD of some of Marvin's greatest live performances on TV and film, "Real Thing: In Performance 1964-1981," This live performance comes from the long out-of-circulation 1973 film, "Save The Children" with James Jamerson on bass.

World's Prettiest Bassline (James Jamerson, 1970)

The Jackson 5 performed Darling Dear on their third album (The Third Album). James Jamerson played bass on this selection with a style and fluency seldom heard in common hours. The bassline is so soulful and beautiful that many musicians speak of having "sung" the bassline instead of the equally great lead vocal line delivered by the gifted and prodigious Michael Jackson. The bassline would qualify as a "wonder of the world" since it is such a bold departure from anything heard at that time, or since. James Jamerson is arguably the greatest bass player to ever live. He played on more number 1 hit records than any other bassist, or musician in the history of popular music. He died a bitter and brokenhearted man since he was neither adequately compensated or recognized for his immeasurable contributions to the spirit and practice of bass playing.

The Four Tops/James Jamerson - Bernadette (Bass playalong)

Just got a new P-Bass, so here's a quick take of James Jamerson's classic line on "Bernadette" by the Four Tops. This is a really fun tune - I'm still sort of finding my voice on the P-Bass (never owned one before) but I'm digging it. It's a Mexican standard P with D'Adarrio flats into an Avalon U5 (no EQ) to a 4-channel mixer and directly into the line in of my MacBook.New transcriptions are also posted on my blog: arcellus.blogspot.com, and there is an archive of my transcriptions at www.arcellussykes.com/archive.html. I also do custom transcription work - visit www.arcellussykes.com/transcriptions.html for details.

Darling Dear - Jackson Five - James Jamerson bass line cover (transcription & tab provided)

Here's my rendition of James Jamerson's bass line on Darling Dear by the Jackson Five (Third album, 1970). I didn't use the transcription from Standing in the Shadows of Motown because I transcribed the bass line a few years ago, before getting the book. So there are a few differences. (There are also a few clams, LOL!) I also added some tab, in the hope that it might be useful. You can download it here: grandsix.org The bass is a 2008 CIJ Fender Precision with LaBella 0760M strings.

What's Happening Brother - Marvin Gaye - James Jamerson bass line (w/ transcription & tab)

Yet another Jamerson bass line. His work on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" (1971) is among the finest electric bass playing ever recorded, IMHO. Here's my transcription: grandsix.org Disclaimer: the tab documents how I play the bass line, not necessarily how Jamerson did it. The bass is a 2008 CIJ Fender Precision with LaBella 0760M strings and a foam mute, recorded through a VT Bass from Tech 21, and an Avalon U5.

Definition of a Slow Jam (James Jamerson, 1969)

The music industry has gotten away from glorifying the "slow jam". Today, corny ballads pose as slow jams, but they leave out one important component: the jam! In essence a slow jam is a down-tempo love song that still maintains a prominent (even muscular) bassline and solid drum beat, with some degree of attitude attached. Cheesy ballads might pose as slow jams but they are only love songs. It takes a solid groove to make a slow jam. James Jamerson was a master of the slow jam groove.

The Hook (for James Jamerson)

This is a simple little tune I wrote for the GREAT James Jamerson. Originaly it had a medium motown-ish groove, But I'm trying it in this 2/3 latin feel. I'm thinking of arranging it for the Bobby Sanabria Quartet. It's goes in and out of clave.... it's just a rough arangement. I'm using My Yamaha TRB 5PII. Let me know what you think. Peace... Jamerson's OMG bass line - Jimmy Ruffin track

Quick playalong - I'd need a few hours warm up to get comfortable with this one - hope it gives you a hint at what a monster technique Jamerson had by '69. I'm guessing this was a Jamerson warm-up or similar that a producer said he wanted to use - it's not the usual wonderful Jamerson improv. Lots of discussion on the net about how hard Jamerson played - my view is he played with a lot of dynamics for most of the time - so hard and soft to taste if you will, but the really fast stuff just had to be played softer (and yes, softer than my feeble attempt - I'm not used to trying lines like this). The preamp, limiter, desk, level on tape etc all affect the final sound, so the amount of dynamics we get to hear are VERY variable from track to track. Still, it's all genius with JJ, so you can't go wrong.

Jamerson's line on 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' is one of my all time favourite bass grooves. I'm also taking the opportunity to show off my home-modded 80's Fender Precision bass with Picato Flatwound strings and a Seymour Duncan 'Quarter-Pound' pickup. Lovely.

Quick run through the first few keys of the exercise transcribed in the essential "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" book about Jamerson - it says Jamerson told the LA session bassist Ron Brown that the exercise was developed to help him practice his chromatic approach to playing.

This is the First Video in a series which I shall be presenting online. The reason I have decide to highlight Stevie Wonders "For Once In My Life", featuring James Jamerson is that: It is a non-repetitive Bassline which carefully outlines and weaves around the vocal line while carefully laying down the groove. I encourage you to sing along with Stevie Wonder and listen to the bassline as it plays with the vocals. This is a master piece and one of my own favorite musical pieces. Cheers !!
