Foxtrott aus Berlin: Michael Jary Orch. - Ja und nein! 1939

Michael JARY (Maksymilian Michał Jarczyk) was born in 1906 to the Polish family in Siemianowice Śląskie(Upper Silesia, Poland -- the territory occupied by Germany until the Ist WW). After completing his education in the Conservatory in Katowice, he was employed as a second conductor in the Theatre Orchestra in Nysa (Neisse), but he gave up his job to continue education in the elitary Musikhochschule in Berlin. He studied composition under direction of Franz Schreker, Paul Hindemith, Arnold Schönberg and Igor Strawinsky. But soon after his diploma concert, in February 1933 the young composer was classified as „a Polish Jew" and his works were banned. Under a pseudonim Michael Jary he started the new life, as a pianist performing in the clubs and a composer of popular hits. One of his songs the vedette of the Third Reich, Hilde Hildebrandt included into her repertoire. For Michał Jarczyk it meant the beginning of the great career. As the leader of Michael Jary Tanz-Orchester he recorded thousands of sides. He was a label name for Odeon, where he recorded with the most famous film stars and singers: Rudi Schuricke, Zarah Leander and dozens of others. His enormous popularity as well as environment of the leading personae in the cultural life of the Third Reich, made the Propaganda Minister Goebbels „forget" about his „incorrect" descent. He died in 1988 in München. Recording: Michael Jary Tanz-Orchester, Refraingesang: Rudi Schuricke -- Ja und Nein! (Franz Grothe) Foxtrott ...

Michael Jary ms Kammer-Tanzorchester - Leise klang eine Weise, Odeon 1940 (Germany) NOTE: A photoshow presents historical photographs of various representatives of European elites, who were either openly enthusiastic to a Third Reich regime (like many representatives of the upper class, including British aristocracy) or, in their relationships with the nazi dictature were adherent to hipocrisy of a "lesser evil" tactics (like many artists, including Richard Strauss or Wilhelm Furtwaengler).

Zarah Leander - Einmal kommt die Liebe (Michael Jary 1960)

This is one of my favourite songs of Zarah Leander's later period... A great composition by Michael Jary, allegedly one of Zarah's great loves, unites drama, a great rhythm and the atmosphere of a smoky nightclub somewhere in South America... Of course the song is about love and Zarah Leander promises that "one day love will come". Some of my favourite pictures of Zarah Leander. Enjoy! All pictures/images from personal collection.

Swing from Berlin (11) Michael Jary - Wenn ich wüsst wen ich geküsst ft. Rudi Schuricke

Michael Jary was not only a succeful composer for the likes of Zarah Leander, Evelyn Künneke and many others but also a band leader... As the record label indicates he was a the helm of his own "Kammer-Tanzorchester/ Chamber Dance Orchestra". Most recordings were made in swing-time.. This track was recorded for Odeon in 1940 with Rudi Schuricke as the vocalist. "Wenn ich wüsst wen ich geküsst" (If only I knew whom I kissed) was composed by Werner Bochmann for the comedy "Meine Tante - Deine Tante". Bochmann is best remembered today for discovering Ilse Werner as singer and composing the melancholic "Die kleine Stadt will schlafen geh'n". "Meine Tante - Deine Tante" starred Johannes Heesters and Olly Holzmann, an Austrian former ice skating champion who enjoyed a succesful but brief movie career. Willi Forst - Unter Einem Regenschirm Am Abend mit Michael Jary

The Original - Willi Forst - Unter Einem Regenschirm Am Abend - Michael Jary Orchester Willi Forst, born Wilhelm Anton Frohs (7 April 1903 in Vienna 11 August 1980, in Vienna) was an Austrian actor, screenwriter, film director, film producer and singer. As a debonair actor he was a darling of the German-speaking film audiences, as a director, one of the most significant makers of the Viennese period musical melodramas and comedies of the 1930s known as Wiener Filme. From the mid-1930s he also recorded many records, largely of sentimental Viennese songs, for the Odeon Records label owned by Carl Lindström AG. Max Raabe sings a nice version.

PIH & CHADA & JARY Moi przyjaciele

Michael Jary Potpourri in Die große Starparade 1954

Swing from Berlin (25) Will Glahe - Sing Nachtigall Sing (1941) & Berlin , summer 1945

Michael Jary composed the melancholic "Sing, Nachtigall sing" for the movie "Auf Wiedersehen, Franziska", directed by the talented Helmut Käutner in 1941. In the movie, which starred Marianne Hoppe and Hans Söhnker, it is heard as background music being played on a gramophone. The best known and - in my opinion best - recorded version is the one by Evelyn Künneke, recorded in 1943. This recording by Will Glahé and his orchestra was made earlier in 1941. The sound is very different from Künneke's and has an exotic feel to it (which is the way the song is heard in the movie). The vocalists are not credited and it is clearly not the popular Schuricke-Terzett. If anyone has any ideas who they are, feel free to leave your comments. About the video : I made 2 videos for this song - one which has the movie and its stars as its theme and one with images of Berlin in the summer of 1945. I found the second video the more powerful - considering the song's lyrics (in translation : Sing nightingale sing, a song of days long gone - Sing nightingale sing touch my weary heart etc.) Last video of this cycle for the time being.
