The United Jazz + Rock Ensemble (abbr. "United" or "URJE") developed from a group of jazz musicians that was formed for a 1974 to 1975 television show of Süddeutscher Rundfunk (South German Broadcasting). Almost all future members of "United" were present from the beginning. The group played mostly original compositions ranging from jazz to rock. Charlie Mariano's experience with Indian music occasionally brought in ethnic elements. Because all band members extensively played in their own bands before and after UJRE was formed the ensemble was often called the „Band of Band Leaders. Some of the members hold teaching positions with various musical colleges. During the 27 years of its existence the band produced 14 albums, all of them on "Mood Records". In 2002 the group went on their "Farewell Tour 2002". Among the reasons was Barbara Thompson's suffering from Parkinson's disease. Walker Adams is a professional drummer living in New York City. A solid funk, rock, and jazz drummer, he is very active in the New York City music scene. Musician, composer, band-leader, and drum teacher Walker studied with such legendary drummers as Kenwood Dennard (Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Maceo Parker), Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon), and Dave DiCenso (Duran Duran, Hiromi). Walker's sound on the drumset has truly developed into a unique voice, and he has drawn inspiration from Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, John Bonham, Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Ringo Star, ?uestlove, Pat Wilson, and many others. Since the age of twelve, Walker Adams has been exploring the subtleties and complexities inherent in the art of modern drumming. They juxtapose a woodwind section slyly with rural compositions, creating a pastoral, even medieval atmosphere, starkly contrasting to nervously urban passages, although they borrow from Art Nova's "Wrapped Her In Ribbons" and give the credits to Geoff Brown. An interesting effort. "New Dawn" is even more schizophrenic. Hosts of wind parts over a tight rocking backdrop are estranged with naggingly dissonant sitar on the highlight, "Ask For Nothing", a strongly philosophical number. If you can stand some horns, these are worthwhile albums to own. The single has a non-album B-side. They also feature on the Nova Sampler playing "Skillet". "I Wrapped Her In Ribbons" has been compiled on See For Miles' "Progressive Pop Inside The Seventies" CD. Dave Caswell also played on Keef Hartley Band's legendary "Overdog" and "The Time Is Near" albums (together with Lyle Jenkins) as well as with Ashton Gardner & Dyke, Kevin Ayers, John Entwistle, Paice Ashton & Lord, Leigh Stephens and Chris Youlden. Songwriter and musician, Al Kooper was the genius behind the original Blood, Sweat & Tears album, Child Is Father to the Man, released in February 1968 by Columbia Records. With its fusion of jazz, rock, blues, and soul, it was unique at that time, though it was less commercially successful than their subsequent releases without Kooper's leadership. "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" is from this album, which is available on CD on the Sony label.
