Born in Portobello near Edinburgh, Phil is a legendary accordionist, Johnny an extraordinary fiddler. Both also gained renowned as composers and entertainers—banter and storytelling being as central to their performances as their astounding playing. They hadn't performed together in eleven years before reuniting for this concert of songs and stories at the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Sadly, Johnny passed away unexpectedly a few months after the Festival. Rare footage by Yvon Chouinard, initially created for National Geographic featuring John Cunningham climbing an unspecified climb on Ben Nevis. No permission was granted to put this up, but I felt this is footage that shoud be shared with people. If the creators are unhappy with this then I can take it down. A few points of interest ... The 'climb' is actually a montage of different shots, I'm not sure the exact climbs, but my best guesses, based on the forum posts that have gone up, and an email are that the initial shot zooming in is Zero gulley (see www.youtube.com ), except that the shot has been reversed for some reason. The middle section, with the avalance is possibly Garadh Gully page 189 of Creaagh Dhu Climber "part of the film was supposed to be fictional," says Chouinard, with John playing a hard case from a rundown part of Glasgow. He rides on his motorbike across Rannoch moor, solos something and then slips and falls but no-one knows if it is real or imagined, it was kinda surreal. The film never got to be seen because in another section, filmed in China , half the film crew were caught in a terrible avalanche. The director was killed and I broke a couple of ribs." Chouinard also mentions the filming in his 'Climbing ice' book (page 157 in the original 1978 version). He mentions being avalanched near Comb Buttress, by a cornice collapse on Number Two gully. The ferry crossing is actually the corran ferry, but probably made to look lik ethe bally one. the ...

Lyrics * as sung here* are at the end of this description. This was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia on April 1, 1988. Donald McGillavry was a fictional character created by James Hogg. In a footnote to The London Literary Gazette's review dated November 11, 1820 of "The Jacobite Relics of Scotland" by James Hogg, where the song was first published, the Gazette stated: "Donald Macgillavry is here put for the Highland Clans generally." Gareth Davis wrote a comprehensive history of this song for Radio De Danann which can be found here: radiodedanann.blogspot.com Silly Wizard members in this clip: Andy M. This was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia on April 1, 1988. I included the banter because it is one of the things that makes this concert so special and so fun to watch. Song lyrics are included at the end of this description. This song was written by Lady Carolina Nairne of Perthshire, Scotland (1766-1845.) The video was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia on April 1, 1988. This song has always been one of my favorites, but this performance is even more touching to me now that Johnny has passed away. I hope that he has found his own land o' the leal. This song can also be found on Andy M. Stewart's CD "Man in the Moon." Silly Wizard members in this clip: Andy M. A tribute to the legendary - and much loved - Scottish fiddler Johnny Cunningham. Casey Neill wrote "King Neptune" in Johnny's honor after his death.

Silly Wizard was a Scottish folk band that began forming in Edinburgh in 1970. The founder members were two like-minded university students—Gordon Jones (guitar, bodhran, vocals, bouzouki, mandola) and Bob Thomas (guitar, mandolin, mandola, banjo, concertina). The as-yet-unnamed band was sometimes joined by thirteen-year-old schoolboy Johnny Cunningham (fiddle, viola, mandola, vocals), who began more extensive touring with the band in 1972. Thomas credited the name of the band to a flatmate who was writing a book of children's stories, and the group first performed as "Silly Wizard" in summer 1972. Chris Pritchard (vocals) replaced Bill Watkins (vocals, guitar) in 1972. From September 1972 until March 1974, the band organized the Saturday night bookings, and regularly performed at, the Triangle Folk Club in Edinburgh. In February 1973, vocalist Chris Pritchard left the band and was replaced by Madelaine Taylor (guitar, bodhran, vocals). In October 1973, the band was signed to Transatlantic Records XTRA label. An album was recorded but before it could be released, Madelaine Taylor left the band in December 1973. The master tapes were subsequently lost and the album has never been released. Bob, Gordon and Johnny began touring as a trio in January 1974, and went on the first of many French tours in April 1974. The band added Neil Adam (bass, harmonium) in September 1974 and Andy M. Stewart (vocals, tin whistle, tenor banjo) in December 1974. In March 1975, Silly Wizard ...
