On May 22, 2011 an EF-5 Monster Tornado over a mile wide leveled portions of the Southwest side of Joplin, Missouri. Jeff and Kathryn Piotrowski knew that the atmosphere that day was going to be extremely volatile and Jeff mentioned many times in his forecast about storms near Joplin. No truer words were spoken as the day unfolded and a tornadic storm developed near Galena, Kansas which traveled on to Joplin and dropped a horrific wedge tornado. Jeff and Kathryn traveled through the city of Joplin not hearing sirens, Jeff yells at a policeman on Hwy 66 or 7th "To get the sirens going" and it wasn't soon enough. Already the tornado had grown in size massively and was intensifying...Jeff and Kathryn filmed it down 20th St. and afterwards turned on the first street they came to which was Iowa Ava. Jeff and Kathryn had filmed this EF-5 within blocks of from 20th. Iowa Ave. was devastated with many fatalities and some survivors. Jeff and Kathryn immediately went into help mode and did what they could to help, comfort and console. God Bless Joplin.

UPDATE: The NWS has classified this storm as EF5. 159 deaths. This deadly storm went from funnel clouds in Galena, KS to a large tornado just west of Joplin. This video from the KSNF tower camera shows the birth of this deadly tornado. I am only posting this video because the station lost power and more than likely does not have this footage. You can see the storm start to vacuum up the power lines as it moved from west to east. It appears the worst damage in Joplin is from the 15th to 32nd streets across the entire city. Home Depot, St. Johns Regional Hospital, Academy, Wal-Mart, Caterpillar, a few of the businesses that are totally destroyed. Total devastation... please pray for the city...

This video was taken at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin Missouri during the memorial service for the disaster survivors. This was at the designated zone for the Westboro Baptist Church protest, but I am unsure if this person was a Westboro Baptist Church Member or not. They did have it posted that they were going to picket Joplin and rumors said they were passing tracks out around town. This gentleman started by bowing his head and sticking his hand in the air like a Nazi salute, which I was unable to capture in the video. This video begins with words exchanged that you can hear for the motorcycles. The protestor approaches the police tape to exchange words with the crowd.

The Joplin Globe has reported every step. Every story. Every obituary, on one recent day, four full pages of obituaries. Every miracle large and small. That is what community newspapers do, but for The Globe, there were special challenges. Of The Globe's 117 employees, about one-fourth lost their homes. In The Globe newsroom, about one-third of the 27 news staffers lost their residences -- and page designer Bruce Baillie, age 56, was killed by the tornado. In the midst of such overwhelming losses, The Globe staff began reporting for work minutes after the twister struck.
