Kabir [1398-1488] Kabir was a weaver and mystic poet from northern India and lived in Hindu holy city of Benares. He was an important influence on the Hindus and Muslims of his time and also a profound influence on Guru Nanak, the first guru of the Sikh religion. Many poems of Kabir can be found in the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred scriptures that form the Guru of Sikhism. Kabir was born in a weaver's family and later adopted by childless Muslim weavers named Niru and Nimma, who found him near Lahara Tara lake, adjacent to the holy city of Varanasi. [3] But his birth is surrounded by legends. Some say he was really the son of a Brahmin widow, adopted by the Muslim couple. [4] Early in his life Kabir became a disciple of the Hindu bhakti saint Ramananda. It was unusual for a Hindu teacher to accept a Muslim student, but legend has it the young Kabir found a creative way to overcome all objections. Kabir knew which temple Ramananda meditated in each day before dawn, and Kabir lay down on the steps outside. Ramananda walked out in the dark and stepped on the boy's body. Astonished, he leaped up, and cried, "Rama!" Kabir then jumped up and said, "You spoke the name of God in my presence. You initiated me. I'm your student!"[5] A Bhakti saint, who sang the ideals of seeing all of humanity as one, his name, Kabir, is often interpreted as Guru's Grace. This bhajan is sung by Kumar Gandharva (1924-1992). He was born in Karnataka, and moved to MP. Kumar Gandharva was known for his versatility and creativity. Because of illness, he was forced to stop singing for some years. This recording is from a 'nirguni' period in mid-life. Kabir was a 15th c. weaver/ poet from just outside of Varanasi. His poems relate to life, death, and spirituality. His beliefs are described as bhakti and sufi. They represent the best of hindu and muslim faith. Sikh religion also absorbed his poetry by Guru Arjan Dev. This bhajan tells of how the world looks like a marketplace - but how the swan flies over it all alone. The spirit's jouney is like a leaf that gets blown as it falls. The last lines emphasize the alone nature of people, because even our teachers and gurus leave us.

KABIR: The Poet Saint and Weaver/ a Documentary
To see the complete documentary go to: www.petermalakoff.com KABIR was the great poet saint and weaver of medieval India. I always loved his poetry. During the winter of 2004 I lived in Benaras. and visited and photographed the world of the Julahas, the Muslim weaving community in which he lived and worked. Although now it seems obvious, it was a delightful discovery for me to find so much of Kabirs imagery and metaphors to be drawn from the world in which he lived. Visiting both Benaras and the weavers gave me a better taste of the flavors of which he speaks and the images of which his metaphors are made. I believe it will allow anyone to see more deeply into his poetry. The full 30 minute movie which you can see on my website, will give you a brief look and feel of Kabirs life and take you on a visit to the world he lived in- the world of the weavers in Benaras. Throughout the movie are many poems of Kabir, most of them taken from Robert Blys translation.
