From the Himalayas in the north to the Nilgiris in the south - for a hundred years these little trains have climbed through the clouds and into the wonderful world of Indian hill railways. Shimla was once the summer capital of the Raj. They built churches, schools, a town hall and the railway and left behind their symbols of empire and an ethos of duty, loyalty and ambition - but they also left a divided subcontinent. Characters featured include Maqsood, a refugee and a porter from Kashmir, and John Whitmarsh-Knight, a teacher looking for a home. Sanjay the station master is hoping for promotion and his boss Bataljit is waiting for a transfer, but everybody is waiting for the snow.

India 'Kalka Mail' train accident kills dozens
The 'Kalka Mail," one of India's longest-running trains, derailed on Sunday near the town of Malwa, killing at least 63 people and injuring more than 250 others. Rescue teams reportedly took two hours to reach the site, and an investigation has been promised. The government has also promised $11000 worth of compensation to the victims of the accident. The derailment was part of a series of railway incidents; on Thursday, a bus collided with a train, and separately on Sunday, a bombing caused a train in the eastern state of Assam to derail, injuring at least 50. Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri reports from New Delhi.

TV9 - 35 KILLED, 200 HURT AS "KALKA MAIL" DERAILS IN "UTTAR PRADESH"...! New Delhi: A special train that was dispatched to carry the injured passengers from the Howrah-Delhi Kalka Mail derailment site in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, reached New Delhi on Monday morning, ending the horrific ordeal. Doctors with medical supplies received over 165 passengers on the platform. The Centre has announced compensation packages for families of all the casualties and the injured. Minister of State for Railways KH Muniyappa said, "It's an unfortunate incident; the Prime Minister has announced compensation for victims." "Rs 5 lakh for family of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh for major injuries and Rs 25000 for simple injuries keeping track of rescue operations," added Muniyappa. The train derailed in Uttar Pradesh leaving over 66 passengers dead and about 250 injured, touting it to be the worst accident of this year. The train was reportedly travelling at a speed of 108 Km/Hr when it derailed near Fatehpur Malwan railway station at 12.20 pm. The Delhi-Howrah route still remains disrupted and seven trains stand cancelled. The impact was such that 13 bogies were thrown off the tracks, many on top of others, which left them badly mangled. The train had 1200 passengers on board when the incident took place leaving scores trapped inside. The first helping hand came from the locals as soon as the police reached the accident spot. Howrah-Delhi Kalka Bound train derails : accident : 35 dead, many injured - 10th July , 12:30 PM
The death toll reached 35 in the Howrah-Delhi Kalka express accident. Sources informed that the two relief trains reached the accident site. Government has announced Rs 1 lakh for all critically injured passengers. Many travellers are still trapped. Rescue team continues their rescue operation. 5:30 PM Howrah-Delhi train: Kalka mail derails, 11 dead,many injured: Atleast 11 people were feared dead and many were injured in the massive train accident as 13 bogies of the Kalka express mail, which was going from Howrah to Delhi, derailed on Sunday, Jul 10. The mishap occurred 65 km away from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. The train was travelling at a speed of 110 km/hr speed at the time of the accident. Sources claimed that the train derailed following the sudden use of the emergency breaks. The experts however rejected the claims citing that it was not possible for 13 bogies to be derailed after applying emergency breaks. Fire and sparks were seen in the AC compartments of the train, as sources revealed. 2 medical trains have been rushed to the spot of the accident site. The accident took place at around 12:30 pm on Sunday when it was passing by Fatehpur Malwa railway station. The place near Fatehpur Malwa in UP reportedly lack enough medical facilities. Latest reports reveal that almost 100 people have been injured due to the accident, as per inputs available at the moment. Injured people have been shifted to local hospitals. A segment of the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train filmed by Jess and Brodie on our August 2010 adventures through India. We rode the Kalka-Shimla Toy Train on our way up to Dharamsala. It was a long day! We woke up in a guest house in the small town of Kalka at 4:00am, hit the train station, boarded, and road this UNESCO narrow-gauge heritage train system up to the mountain town of Shimla before hiring a driver for the 9 hour journey to Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj, high in the Himalayan foothills. It was an amazing day in our adventure through India!!
