Space Shuttle Footage - The Kármán Line - By Michael Rywalt [Higher Quality]

*** Update *** 7/14/2011: "The Kármán Line" single is now available for download on iTunes! Get your copy today! This is a higher quality version of the original The Kármán Line video that was uploaded a couple of years ago. This is an original song I wrote and recorded, with video footage from NASA that I edited to fit the song. In 2008, NASA celebrated its 50th anniversary. Today, as we draw near the end of the shuttle program, this video highlights some of the most recognizable sights and sounds of the long running shuttle program. The Kármán Line features video from various missions in support of the International Space Station (ISS), including STS- 116, 117, 118, 122, 123, and 124. Some of the space to Earth views come from ISS Expedition 13. There are audio samples in this video from the launch of the STS-124 mission, with closing words by Akihiko Hoshide during the Day 8 Wakeup Call. The Kármán line is an internationally recognized boundary between the Earth's atmosphere and outer space. Enjoy the video, and I hope you find it inspiring!

Nobel Peace Winner Tawakkul Karman on Yemen and the US War on Terror

www.DemocracyNow.org - Yemeni activist and journalist, Tawakkul Karman, was one of the recipients of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize awarded Friday. Karman spoke in New York City at the Brecht Forum in September 2010 about state violence, targeted killings, and human rights abuses enabled by the so-called "War on Terror." Democracy Now! was there and bring you part of her address. Karman notes that by cooperating with the Yemeni government's repression of its opponents, the United States "has transitioned from being the leader of the free world to a watch dog for tyrant regimes." Exclusive: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Tawakkul Karman on the Struggle for Democracy in Yemen

www.DemocracyNow.org - In a Democracy Now! exclusive interview, we speak to Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Yemeni activist, Tawakkul Karman. The UN Security Council is set to vote on a resolution calling on Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to immediately step down after 33 years in power. All five permanent members of the Security Council back the measure, which "strongly condemns" government violence against demonstrators. The popular uprising Yemen continues despite more attacks by government forces, including dozens of demonstrators murdered by snipers in recent days. Karman has been in New York City all week to press for international pressure on the Saleh regime. She is the first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. A 32-year-old mother of three, an outspoken journalist and Yemeni activist, Karman has agitated for press freedoms and staged weekly sit-ins to demand the release of political prisoners from jail. She founded Women Journalists Without Chains and has played a leading part in the struggle for women's rights and for democracy in Yemen. Most recently, she has led rallies in the continuing protests against the rule of Saleh. "We have the dream, and we have the ability...we will not stop here, we will build our country," Karman said. "We tell Saudi that they should stand with the Yemeni people. And anyone who doesn't stand with our people, they are the losers. We know what it means to be free, and we will achieve it." joewalker.com http fromthewoodshed.com Joe Walker's Graduate Recital San Diego State University March 6, 2011 Video by David McCarter www.heavymetaldave.net "The Kármán Line" - Joe Walker At 100km above sea level, the Kármán line defines the boundary between the Earth's atmosphere and outer space. It is the point at which air becomes so thin that an aircraft must exceed orbital velocity (the speed required for a spacecraft to remain in orbit) in order to maintain lift. American test pilot Joseph Albert Walker (no relation), made two spaceplane flights past this threshold in 1963, the only such flights ever made until 2004. "The Kármán Line" is about what it might be like to drift beyond that line and back (sans roaring engines). Von Karman Vortex Street behind a flat plate (Laminar).mov

A Von Karman Vortex Street forming behind a flat plate in a 2D channel. The Navier-Stokes equations were solved here using the semi-Lagrange method (for the advection terms) with Helmholtz decomposition (for the pressure field), as outlined in the paper 'Stable Fluids' by Jos Stam (1995) (and various others by the same author). Some vorticity confinement was used to compensate for false diffusion. The Reynolds number based on plate length is 80, but this is not to be used for any strict comparison due to the use of vorticity confinement and false diffusion. The stable fluids solution paradigm is not really intended for scientific purposes, but rather for real time good-looking stuff. It is a fully implicit first order in time, second order in space method. Thus it never 'blows up' and is therefore attractive for use in games where absolute precision is not really an issue. Colouration is based on the concentration of a passive scalar advected by the flow (ie dye / smoke injection). The channel walls are no-slip boundaries. Also some dye is injected on the wall at the inlet to see how the near-wall flow is affected by the outer motions. Once again, this is just for fun and is NOT a serious computation. Convergence etc. was not enforced and there is indeed some small amount of mass disappearing into numerical oblivion.... As usual, all coded in Visual Basic ;-D

People chant "People want the fall of the regime. We won't be terrorized by cannon fire, we won't be terrorized by state thugs... Yemeni people enlightened (awoke)" Peaceful revolution lead by Tawakkul Karman, Nobel Peace Prize Winner. After theocratic monarchy had been overthrown in 1962, women got equal rights with men. But since President Saleh came to power women were methodically deprived of gained rights, and radical clergy got empowered again by the regime of Saleh. All secular opposition leaders were assassinated, arrested and tortured. Same fate befell women in the South Yemen after unification with the North. South Yemen was non-muslim, secular, social-democratic state. Currently women are dependent on male relatives, since most economic and all political activities are prohibited for them. Girls as young as nine are not protected and can be given in "marriage".

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE 2011 Tawakul Karman Leader of Yemen Revolution

Tawakul Karman a mother of three children who sparked off the Yemeni Revolution receives the Nobel Peace Prize. The video shows her on the fourth day of of the revolution leading the students out of Sanaa University, chanting "revolution". She is identified by her blue patterned hijab in the clip. Her calls for an end to corruption and family ownership of Yemen (referring to the president), struck a cord with most Yemenis. She also openly called the army away from the president, telling them they are the people's army not the family army, some month later the army split away from the president as the slaughtering of protesters caused them to re-evaluate their allegience and go with the people not against. She renounces violence and calls the president to stop killing the nation. Tawakul Karman has been imprisoned, had her house raided and bombed, her family imprisoned and tortured, and made a mockery of by the Yemeni president. Yet to no avail for them. She now lives in Change Square, in a makeshift tent, in the protest camp in Sanaa. She is from Taiz, a central province of Yemen, the former capital of the northern Yemen imamate. She stands firmly against the Gulf Cooperation Council plan that envisages Ali Abdullah Saleh and his government being given immunity, which is the plan backed by USA, UK, France and rejected by the Yemeni people. The Yemeni people want to see Ali Abdullah Saleh out like Mubarak and ben Ali.

Yemeni Activist Tawakkul Karman, 1st Female Arab Nobel Peace Laureate: A Nod for Arab Spring

www.DemocracyNow.org - In an interview, Yemeni activist Tawakkul Karman said her Nobel Peace prize is a victory for Yemen and for all of the uprisings of the Arab Spring. Kaman is a 32-year-old journalist and the head of the Yemeni non-profit group, Women Journalists Without Chains. She was detained for a time during the political unrest earlier this year. She is the first Arab female to win the Nobel Peace Prize and is believed to the youngest winner of the peace prize to date, slightly edging out the Irish activist Mairead Corrigan who won in 1976. Democracy Now! gets reaction to the announcement from British journalist Iona Craig, who has been closely following the uprising in Yemen. "This nobel peace prize will actually in some ways go towards protecting her. Now she will become an even greater international figure and certainly if the regime sought to detain her again, I think they would create a huge problem for themselves," Craig says. "The Arab People Have Woken Up": Yemeni Activist Tawakkul Karman Accepts Nobel Peace

DemocracyNow.org - The 2011 Nobel Peace Prize was presented this weekend to three women for "their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights [to] full participation in peace-building work." Democracy Now! aired highlights on Monday of the acceptance speeches of Liberian activist Leymah Gbowee, and Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first democratically elected female head of state on the African continent. Today we complete our coverage with the acceptance speech of Tawakkul Karman from Yemen, the first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, as well as its youngest winner to date. Karman, a 32-year-old mother of three and an outspoken journalist and activist, has agitated for press freedoms and staged weekly sit-ins to demand the release of political prisoners from jail. She founded Women Journalists Without Chains and has played a leading part in the struggle for women's rights and for democracy in Yemen. Most recently, she has led rallies in the protests against the rule of the longstanding US-ally, President Ali Abdullah Saleh. "The Arab world is today witnessing the birth of a new world which tyrants and unjust rulers strive to oppose, but in the end, this new world will inevitably emerge," Karman says. "Our oppressed people have revolted declaring the emergence of a new dawn, in which the sovereignty of the people, and their invincible will, will prevail.
