THE IDEA Appalled by the news and oftentimes lack thereof about the scale of human suffering in northern Uganda, Barefoot Workshops founder Chandler Griffin contacted singer/songwriter and artist Joseph Arthur. Joseph's song In the Sun, the proceeds of which benefited victims of Hurricane Katrina, had been a source of inspiration for Chandler who sensed that Joseph might be kindred spirit. The two decided to visit an IDP (internally-displaced persons) camp and witness for themselves the destruction wrought by nearly two decades of fighting between the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) and Ugandan Government forces and to conduct an music, art and drama festival for young people. The festival, they envisioned, would provide a means of creative expression to young people traumatized by violent events, the deaths often witnessed of loved ones, sexual violations and displacement from their homes and communities. The festival could give a voice to these young people and bring joy to them and the residents of the camps who would be the festival audience. "From that point forward, events moved quickly. Soon, Chandler and Joseph, along with filmmakers Cecily Pingree and Jason Mann were on their way to Lira, Uganda and the IDP camps into which the majority of the local population has been forced". Before their arrival, however, an enormous amount of work had to be accomplished on the ground in preparation for the arts festival. As fisherman and wildlife made headlines in the aftermath of the BP oil spill, Archeologist, Dr. Edward Jackson tells a different story to tell. He depends on fragile marshes resources along the Gulf Coast, already devastated by Hurricane Katrina, as a vital outdoor laboratory, to study subsistence patterns of past civilizations. There are over 19000 archeological sites recorded in MS, some holding some of the highest concentrations of prehistoric evidence in the world, dating back 10000-12000 years. This four-minute video documents Edward Jackson and his team of students from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), on a "search and rescue" mission to save archeological artifacts from contamination by oil that would make carbon dating impossible. The group investigates shell middens in order to find clues to how human populations today, can subsist sustainably, based on solutions developed by prehistoric Native American communities. Although the economic scale is one of subsistence in the past, versus commercial enterprise today, Dr. Jackson insists, that we must salvage lessons of the past in order to understand our options for the future. On a map printed in the Nov. 4, 1994, issue of Science magazine, the Pascagoula system in southeast Mississippi is the only patch of green this side of Alaska and the northern territories of Canada. Though it has dams in its extreme upper headwaters — such as Little Black Creek Water Park, Lake Bogue Homa and Okatibbee Lake — the Pascagoula remains the only major river system in the lower forty-eight states, that still runs free. Yet in 2009, American Rivers listed the Pascagoula River among the ten most endangered rivers in America, owing to the threat of new petroleum storage. According to the report, the US Department of Energy initiated plans under the Bush administration, to pump fifty million gallons of water per day from the river, over the course of five years, to hollow out naturally-occurring salt domes, in order to create more storage capacity for oil. The Richton Salt Domes, located thirty miles northwest of the basin, would increase US storage capacity by 160 million barrels. Approximately 330 miles of pipeline would have to be constructed to withdraw water from the Pascagoula, to pump the salty, polluted byproduct out to one of Mississippi's barrier islands, and distribute oil to and from the site. The plan would nearly double the amount of water currently taken from the Pascagoula River. The DOE estimates the project would cost approximately $4 billion dollars to complete.
