The final broadcast version looked different than this. Hope you enjoy. Those of you editing trend spotters... we created a few new looks for this show; I've seen the fast - normal - fast motion everywhere now, but I have yet to see much of the "ani-matte" effects -- the effects where part of the image behind an interviewed person drops off and then the person fades out.... The effect is also repeated with cars, buses and other moving objects. I think the reason other editors didn't "borrow" this effect is that it isn't obvious how to do it. E-mail me if you're an AVID editor and I'll tell you. (It would be much harder in FCP). Presented for artistic demo purposes.

This is an exclusive video which represents a rough cut for artistic demo purposes. Please forgive the rough edges and sound glitches -- this is smoothed out later once the edit is approved. A rough cut is part of the process of refining a show... reality TV is known for generating tons and tons of "rough cuts" before they get the story they want. Although editing is the least understood part of film and television production, it is the most important -- especially in Reality and Docs. Why? Because the edit defines the actual story, the content, the appeal, the entertainment value. We see a lot of reality now because it's cheap. Reality is non-union, and generally is very slippery on issues like worker's rights and obeying labor law. I can take the same material and cut it any which way you'd like.... This same material can be turned into comedy, suspense, horror, drama, reality, documentary, science fiction... whatever you can dream of. And by the way, you already know this don't you... Reality TV is the biggest lie of any format of television. Although usually the events themselves where staged, the outcomes and the dramas are almost entirely made up in the edit bay. It is the LEAST real of any film or TV format. :) Kept Episode 1 had over 50 variations before I lost count. This has never been seen before and very different from the aired version.
