Music from Talib Kweli's upcoming album, Prisoner of Conscious, out in 2012 on Blacksmith / EMI. "Distractions" is produced by Oh No. The music video is directed by Darryl Phillips, of ICU Media. Download the MP3 of the song for free at www.facebook.com Message from Talib Kweli about the song: "A little less a year ago, I got a beat from one of my favorite producers, Oh No, that I felt would be a perfect sound bed for the album I was working on, Prisoner Of Conscious. As I played the beat over and over trying to write lyrics, I kept finding myself distracted. By the TV, by twitter, by trivial things. I realized then that the beat was asking me to write about Distractions. Beats talk to me. They tell me what to rap about, they suggest a guest for the song. One of the things I was distracted by was the news coming from Tahrir Square last year. The Arab Spring was unlike anything I've seen in my lifetime. Beginning with a vegetable cart owner named Mohammed Bouazizi setting himself on fire in Tunisia to protest general unfair treatment, the Arab Spring spread like wildfire to Sudan and then to Egypt, as thousands of protestors occupied Tahrir Square to call for corrupt president Hosni Mubarak to step down. The first line that I wrote for my song Distractions was, "they say it ain't about the spoils of war, but turn around and tell you how much more the oil will cost." This was inspired by the Arab Spring. Fast forward to September, 2011. Occupy Wall Street exploded into the ...

Order the triangle shaped, neon blue vinyl: www.fatbeats.com "Time Leak" features Talib Kweli on the verses and Sly Johnson's soulful belting on the hooks. The music video pays homage to The Matrix, Alien, the work of David Cronenberg, and any other spacey cult classic you can name drop. The visuals show Union 'controlling" a female body with their instrumentals, eventually bringing her to life and getting her to dance. This single is available on a very special 12" offering from Fat Beats Records newest and most mysterious signees, Union. It comes on a neon, triangle shaped vinyl in a thick clear plastc poly bag. The A side is main version, along with the banging, spacey instrumental that Union is known for. The B Side contains two remixes: Redefinition Records' Damu the Fudgemunk, and Project Mooncircle's fLako. Union consists of two Parisian producers whose otherworldly approach to analog-driven, melodically abstract, sample free hip-hop inspired Fat Beats Records to extend a label invitation immediately. When a mysterious, monolithic, glossy black package arrived at FBHQ with nothing more than a cryptic note and an unlabeled CD inside, the staff wasn't sure if Stanley Kubrick had risen from the dead to make mixtapes or if their lives were about to be transformed forever. Luckily it was the latter, and today the legendary label is poised to unleash Union's debut album Analogtronics on an unsuspecting Earth in the Dawn of 2012.

From 1998 Album: "Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star"...[Artist info below]..... Get Black Star's Music: www.amazon.com & itunes.apple.com Black Star arose from the underground movement of the late 1990s, which was in large part due to Rawkus Records, an independent record label stationed in New York City. They released one self titled album. Though the record achieved little commercial success, they (and other members of the Native Tongues Posse) helped shape underground alternative rap and helped bring it further into the mainstream eye. Both have gone on to greater commercial and critical success in separate solo careers. Black Star's emergence into the hip-hop scene came at a crucial point in music history. Following the deaths of both Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, hip-hop was consumed in a world of chaos. Black Star attempted to bring reconciliation in the wake of these violent deaths. The self titled album contains various references to Biggie and Tupac, and attempts to create reconciliation in the hip-hop world: "I said one, two, three. It's kinda dangerous to be an MC They shot Tupac and Biggie. Too much violence in hip-hop." In 2001, Black Star performed "Money Jungle" with Ron Carter and John Patton for the Red Hot Organization's compilation album Red Hot + Indigo, a tribute to Duke Ellington, which raised money for various charities devoted to increasing AIDS awareness and fighting the disease. In 2005, hip hop website TheSituation.co.uk reported Kweli has ...

Lyrics: [Talib Kweli] Expect the unexpected Yo [Intro & Interlude: Talib Kweli & Timberlake] It's kind of hard to keep faith in the things that you do When everybody turns they back on you [repeat first two lines 3X] It's kind of hard to keep faith in the things that you do When everybody turns their back... [Talib Kweli] Yeah I know a city that's surrounded by a beautiful beach The economy boosted by the drugs they move in the street More clearer than the crystal sky, blue as the beast The people ain't got shoes for they feet, or food to eat So they hurtin but what's for certain you can get you some heat And over beef you laid to rest like you was gettin some sleep Where the little kids get ammunition (word) you can't get no nutrition Or any type of suitable living condition listen They shoot you over that paper, its just survivalist human nature to put you out of your misery like euthanasia (yeah) Don't let them fool you we ain't different than the youth in Asia Africa and Europe, it's a small world we truly neighbors If they the third world then who the first to get to heaven I know it's hard but who does God choose to go through it worst Usually it's the prophets, ask a cat what really matters Nowadays usually it's his pockets [Chorus: Justin Timberlake (Talib ad libs)] We gotta get back to what really matters We gotta search our soul to find out, what we're after The more I find my voice the more they try to make it ...

www.hardknock.tv Hard Knock Tv's Devi Dev and Nick Huff Barili talk to Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek talk about the early years of Kanye West's career. From Kanye opening up for Kweli to labels not wanting to sign him as a rapper. Kweli says that people didn't see Kanye's vision as an artist and just wanted his beats. Kweli says that he knew "College Drop Out" was a classic when he first heard it. Hi-Tek adds that Kanye is a genius in the same way that Dr Dre is. I personally remember getting the white label vinyl of "Through The Wire" "Two Words" that Kanye paid to press up himself because at that time Def Jam and The Roc weren't pushing him out. I also remember being at the Def Jam office's in NY (during CMJ) with the Rap Attack DJ's telling them that they needed to get behind that record because we were all getting great feedback at our college radio stations. Ye' has come a long way since then! -NHB For more on Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek) check out www.hardknock.tv.

LP "Soundbombing Vol. 2" compilation released in 1999 Common (originally Common Sense) was a highly influential figure in rap's underground during the '90s, keeping the sophisticated lyrical technique and flowing syncopations of jazz-rap alive in an era when commercial gangsta rap was threatening to obliterate everything in its path. His literate, intelligent, nimbly performed rhymes and political consciousness certainly didn't fit the fashions of the moment, but he was able to win a devoted cult audience. By the late '90s, a substantial underground movement had set about reviving the bohemian sensibility of alternative rap, and Common finally started to receive wider recognition as a creative force. Not only were his albums praised by critics, but he was able to sign with a major label that guaranteed him more exposure than ever before. Common was born Lonnie Rashied Lynn on the South Side of Chicago, an area not exactly noted for its fertile hip-hop scene. Nonetheless, he honed his skills to the point where -- performing as Common Sense -- he was able to catch his first break, winning The Source magazine's Unsigned Hype contest. He debuted in 1992 with the single "Take It EZ," which appeared on his Combat-released debut album, Can I Borrow a Dollar?; further singles "Breaker 1/9" and "Soul by the Pound" helped establish his reputation in the hip-hop underground, although some critics complained about the record's occasional misogynistic undertones.
