A new EU5 2.2-litre diesel engine replaces the EU4 2.4-litre diesel for 2011, bringing new levels of performance and refinement to the Defender for 2012. The smaller capacity engine delivers the same power, torque and economy as its outgoing sister but makes this the cleanest Land Rover Defender yet produced. In EU5 markets, the new engine comes with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to ensure the lowest possible levels of regulated emissions. Following a major upgrade in 2007 which included a new facia and six-speed manual transmission, the Defender's specification has been further improved for 2012. In addition to the existing 'S' and 'SE' trim levels, there are five new option packs, new alloy wheels, ventilated discs on all variants and a number of detail improvements to the interior. Three speed-limiting options will also be offered to fleet users wanting to gain more effective control of fuel costs. The Defender can trace its roots back to 1948 and during that period Land Rovers have earned a reputation as the most rugged and versatile off-road vehicles in the world. Since 2002, the Defender has consistently sold an average of 25000 units a year worldwide. Retail and utility customers, armed forces and NGOs in over 100 countries believe that the Defender's off-road ability, durability and towing capability are still head and shoulders above the competition. The fourth generation Discovery 4 was launched in 2009, and went on sale in the United Kingdom on 1 September. Compared with the 2.7 litre TDV6 engine, which continues to be offered on the Discovery 4, the new TDV6 3.0 litre twin turbo diesel engine delivers a 9% fuel economy improvement (EU combined cycle) and 10% lower CO2 emissions, at the same time as increasing power by 28% to 241 bhp (180 kW); torque increases 36% to 600 N·m (440 lb·ft). The results include a 060 mph time of 9.0 seconds, (0100 km/h in 9.6 seconds), a 24% improvement over the 2.7 litre model. The new engine has been optimised for low-end torque as well as economy, making it possible to activate the lock-up clutch of the ZF HP-28 automatic transmission at lower speed. This reduces 'slip' in the hydraulic torque converter improving both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The higher torque at lower engine speeds also enables longer gearing for more economical cruising. Land Rover's engineers have also transformed the on-road ride, handling and off-road capabilities. The changes include new suspension components, revised steering, larger brakes, improved traction control, and enhancements to the Terrain Response system, which helps optimise the vehicle for different on-road or off-road driving situations. The exterior design of the Land Rover Discovery 4 has been updated, most obviously with smoother and simpler surfaces at the front, including a new, more aerodynamic bumper. Designed and produced by Land Rover UK and Barkers Performance Products, this electric vehicle is the new frontier in zero emissions safari vehicles. Londolozi has been pioneering a zero emissions safari vehicle for the last 3 years and is proud to be a part of this initiative.

The outstanding 211PS 3.0 LR-TDV6 diesel remains the entry level choice for Discovery 4 customers in European markets conforming to EU5 emissions regulations. For 2012, the engine has been further improved with a reduction in CO2 emissions from 244g/km to 224g/km thanks to a low-flow fuel injection system and a new, highly efficient, ZF 8HP70, 8-speed automatic transmission. This new 8-speed transmission benefits the high powered 3.0 LR-SDV6 with an increase in power output from 245PS to 256PS and helps drive down CO2 emissions from 244g/km to 230g/km. In conjunction with the new transmission, the Discovery 4 is now equipped with the rotary gear shift selector and steering wheel-mounted paddle shift. All EU5 models are equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF), making them among the cleanest diesel engines on the market. European markets and countries still conforming to EU4 regulations, will receive the existing 245PS version of the LR-SDV6 3.0, equipped with the ultra-refined 6-speed automatic transmission with command shift. In addition to the driveline improvements, the Discovery 4's design and equipment levels have been given a makeover too. There are two new alloy wheel designs, three new option packs and improved audio and navigation systems based on the latest MOST Gen 2.1 electrical architecture. We asked ourselves; is it possible to swap the chassis of a Series 2 Land Rover in one day? We started at 9:00 am in the morning and finished at 01:00 am, 16 hours of work with two men at the job did the trick. The car is a 1958 model 88" Series 2 Land Rover. The location is outside our (too) small storage-building in Kristiansand, Norway. Enjoy!
