Dave and I flew out of JFK on Sunday, August 31st and we landed in Jacksonville, FL around 4pm that afternoon. Jacksonville was the closest airport we could get that wasn't going to be in the affected zone. Then, after getting the rental car we drove the 650 miles to our target area and met up with George Kourounis and Mark Robinson from Canada....as well as Tim Millar from Florida. But, getting to the target area meant driving through New Orleans at 2am when a curfew was in full affect. We both kept our fingers crossed and after getting turned around a few times by road blocks, we made it across the lake, and into Houma where we finally arrived at 3am! After arriving and greeting all our chaser friends who made it there before us, it was time to grab a quick nap before things started to pick up. We logged a righteous one hour of sleep before having to get up and get ready, lol The show started around 6am and by 9am, we were receiving sustained winds in the tropical storm force range. This was by no means the predicted doomsday scenario by any means, but Gustav did put on a good show for us when all was said and done. We documented the northern eyewall as it moved over Houma and were treated to a barrage of flying shingles, sheet metal, glass and tree parts. But, the real fun came when we were driving down Main street in the center of town and one of the above mentioned roof shingles came flying right through the passenger side window on our vehicle! This video is "Part 1" and contains Katrina's first landfall on the South Florida area as a strengthening Cat-1 Hurricane. You will see many tourists were out in the wind and did not take this Hurricane serious resulting in many avoidable deaths. The people seen in this video were NOT with Ultimate Chase and were advised not to go out into the direct force of the wind. They did so anyway so we filmed them since they became part of the story. Katrina was responsible for 14 deaths in Southern Florida. Mike first films 90mph winds in the Ft. Lauderdale area. Then after dark drives back home through the southern eyewall and finally arrives after 5 intense hours to his condo in Homestead, Florida only to find no power and flooding all the way up to his door step. Mike's roof sustained moderate damage and many large trees went down in his neighborhood. Homestead was spared from Katrina's eye and eyewall but still got hit hard. Once Katrina crossed the Florida peninsula she rapidly intensified and became a Cat-5 Hurricane and caused record breaking storm surge on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and a second disaster in New Orleans as the levee's broke and flooded the city. Hatteras Island remains severely crippled from the tail end effects of Irene. Various loops of Hurricane Andrew's landfall in Southeast Florida from the Miami and Tampa WSR-57 radars. On several of the long-range Miami loops, a large black wedge shape (indicating no reflectivity) appears on the very last frame...this occurred when the radome blew off the National Hurricane Center building during a 164mph gust, destroying the Miami radar. After Miami's radar failed (and Key West's radar had lost power), forecasters were still able to monitor the progress of Andrew's eyewall, which was just in range, on Tampa radar as the hurricane crossed the southern portion of the Florida peninsula. On the close-up loops of Andrew's eyewall, a distinct dual-hemispheric organization of the radar eye can be seen, with each half rotating cyclonically in tandem with the other, in a trochoidal looping pattern. Post-analysis indicated that one of these was the storm's wind-center, while the other was the pressure-center, which were displaced from each other by a distance of about 5 miles.
