Sri Lanka: reconciliation and justice

16/05/12 Nearly three years after the end of the 26-year civil war in Sri Lanka that reportedly left an estimated 80000-100000 dead, questions are still arising about alleged war crimes and how they will be addressed. The Killing Fields, first broadcast by Channel 4 in June last year and a follow up aired this March called Sri Lanka's Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished, have been significant in bringing evidence of executions, the shelling of civilians and other atrocities to light. The Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence rejects the evidence, however, arguing that it has been falsified by Channel 4 and that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE ) were responsible for a proportion of the civilian casualties. It also rejected calls from the UN-led investigation into alleged war crimes, opting for a locally-organised investigation, the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). What action will the Sri Lankan government take in light of new footage and will it be forced address the issue of high-command responsibility? After the failing of the international community to prevent such atrocities, what role can they play in the future? Join us at the Frontline Club to discuss the impact of Sri Lanka's Killing Fields and the situation today in Sri Lanka. Chaired by Stephen Sackur, the host of BBC Hardtalk. With: Callum Macrae, journalist, filmmaker and Director of both Sri Lanka's Killing Fields and Sri Lanka's Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished that documents ...

"Lanka" Watch This Full Bollywood Hindi Movie. "Lanka" It is a story of a woman who recounts her story of being confined to live as an unwed wife of an influential gangster. Dr. Anju Khanna is admonished by hospital administration when she gets upset with a male for assaulting his wife. She then recounts her very own story of being forcibly confined by Bijnor-based Jaswant Sisodiya, an influential gangster, who loves her insanely but refuses to marry her. Her as well as doctor father's attempts to seek justice are all in vain. Then Jaswant's protégé, known only as Rajvir's son, re-enters Jaswant's life. He is very loyal and dedicated to the latter, and does everything he is told without question. When attacked by a group who oppose Jaswant, he kills seven men, is arrested, tried in Court, and acquitted. He then saves Jaswant's life from an assassin allegedly hired by SP Bhupen Singh, and then ensures the latter's demise. Then Jaswant's life faces more challenges when the Criminal Investigation Department from Lucknow launches an inquiry following a complaint from Anju and her dad. It is this move that will compel Jaswant to force Dr. Khanna to withdraw this complaint by making it clear that if he cannot have Anju for himself then he will ensure that she becomes 'public property' - and he will arrange her to be sold to a brothel - and then transported to Dubai.

Sri Lankan faces beheading in Saudi Arabia for 'witchcraft'

nma.tv A Sri Lankan woman was arrested and given the death penalty for allegedly using witchcraft on an unsuspecting 13-year-old girl in Saudi Arabia. The young girl began acting erratically during a shopping trip in Jeddah after she was in close proximity to the suspected woman. Her father accused the woman of casting a spell on his daughter and reported her to security forces, resulting in her swift arrest. Witchcraft and sorcery are punishable by the death penalty in Saudi Arabia, a country where court rulings are based on Wahhabism, a strict, ultra-conservative form of Sunni Islam. Other illegal activities under Wahhabism include homosexuality, acting like a tomboy and drinking alcohol. In September, a Sudanese man was beheaded after being convicted on sorcery charges. A few months later a woman met the same fate. Amnesty International has since began to campaign against such executions.

Lanka (High Definition)

"So close and yet so far". The famous song from Elvis Presley best describes the city of Bijnor. Resting at the northern tip of Uttar Pradesh, Bijnor is still untouched by the progress which is reserved for the metros; just like so many other small towns of India. A few hours from Delhi, Bijnor is still trying to wrestle out of its poverty and its oblivion. He was not a thief, nor a gun-toting criminal. He was not a warlord either. But the city of Bijnor was well aware of this Bhaisaab (Elder Brother); some revered him, some feared him but none ignored him. Closely guarded by the loyalist, Jaswant Sisodia ruled the city of Bijnor; his business empire comprising of sugarcane mills, country liquor distilleries and various other enterprises; some legal and mostly illegal. With parents dead in his formative years, Jaswant was brought up by his father's man Friday, Rajbir. Rajbir and his fourteen-year old son was the only family known to Jaswant, who was now in the prime of his youth. Rajbir's son was in awe of his mentor; some day he would want to be like Jaswant.

The culture of Sri Lanka has been influenced by many things in the past, but has managed to retain much of its ancient, rich aspects. Mostly it has been influenced by its rich history, diversity, and religious beliefs. The country has a rich artistic tradition, embracing the fine arts, including music, dance, and visual arts. Sri Lankan lifestyle is reflected in the cuisine, festivals, and sports. South Indian influences are visible in many aspects. There is also some influences from colonization by the Dutch, the Portuguese and the British. Sri Lankan culture is best known abroad for its cricket, food, and cultural exports, like tea. Sri Lankan culture is diverse, as it varies from region to region. Colombo was the capital of the coastal areas controlled by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British from the 1700s to the 1815 when the British gained control of the entire island following the Kandian convention. From then until the 1980s the national capital of the island was Colombo. During the 1980s plans were made to move the administrative capital to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte and thus move all governmental institutions out of Colombo to make way for commercial activities. As a primary step the Parliament was moved to a new complex in Kotte and several ministries and departments were also moved. However the move was never completed. Today many governmental institutions still remain in Colombo. These include the President's House, Presidential Secretariat, Prime Minister's ...

Sri Lanka Air Force - MiG-27

About the Mig-27 Fight Jets in Sri Lanka. The Mikoyan MiG-27 (Russian: Микоян МиГ-27) (NATO reporting name "Flogger-D/J") is a variable-geometry ground-attack aircraft, originally built by the Mikoyan design bureau in the Soviet Union and later license-produced in India by Hindustan Aeronautics as the Bahadur ("Valiant"). It is based on the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 fighter aircraft, but optimized for air-to-ground attack. Unlike the MiG-23, the MiG-27 did not see widespread use outside Russia, as most countries opted for the MiG-23BN and Sukhoi Su-25 instead. It currently only remains in service with the Indian, Kazakh and Sri Lankan Air Forces in the ground attack role. All Russian and Ukrainian MiG-27s have been retired.
