Gunsmith - Lapping riflescope rings to improve holding power
While today's scope rings are of the best quality they have ever been, many can still be improved using a simple process called lapping. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, explains this process using the Wheeler Engineering Scope Lapping Kit. This kit includes a steel bar that when coated with 220 grit lapping compound is worked back and forth inside the assembled rings. This smoothes out any high spots and increases the surface contact between the rings and the scope body. This prevents damage to the scope body, which more rigidly holding the scope to prevent any shifts in point of impact that can result from continuous use.

How To Check My CPU Before Lapping
This video will show you how I determine if lapping a CPU is needed. Not all CPU's and Coolers need to be lapped. Even after determining whether you need to lap your CPU, you should first install the CPU to make sure it is not a dud and run several temp tests to verify your CPU temperature. This will give you a base temp to start with, so if you do lap your CPU, you will know if your CPU temps have improved. Even if you feel the need to lap your CPU, it is possible that the temps you are realizing are acceptable, meaning lapping may not be required. How Cats Uptake Water by Lapping

Aristoff, Roman Stocker, "How Cats Lap: Water Uptake by Felis catus," Science, Published Online November 11, 2010. dx.doi.org Animals have developed a range of drinking strategies depending on physiological and environmental constraints. Vertebrates with incomplete cheeks use their tongue to drink; the most common example is the lapping of cats and dogs. We show that the domestic cat (Felis catus) laps by a subtle mechanism based on water adhesion to the dorsal side of the tongue. A combined experimental and theoretical analysis reveals that Felis catus exploits fluid inertia to defeat gravity and pull liquid into the mouth. This competition between inertia and gravity sets the lapping frequency and yields a prediction for the dependence of frequency on animal mass. Measurements of lapping frequency across the family Felidae support this prediction, which suggests that the lapping mechanism is conserved among felines
Ford GT40 Lapping at Palm Beach International Raceway - PBIR (Onboard)
This is a 1966-model GT40 Mk.I doing some test laps at Palm Beach International Raceway. Filmed during Brian Redman's Targa 66 program in February 2009, the car is a prototype of the GT40R being built to compete in HSR and SVRA historic racing. Behind the wheel is Divina Galica, a former Formula 1 driver and olympic skiing champion from the UK. This car is Superformance chassis number GT40P/2192 and is registered in the Safir GT40 and Shelby Registries. This particular car was featured in the March 2009 edition of 'Car & Driver' magazine. How to Mount a Scope

Valve Lapping with Air Assist
Demonstrating of Valve Lapping on cylinder head (1.8L 4-cylinder head for MGB) with Air (pneumatic) drill. Could not get good suction with Hand-Lap Tool as some valves had small pits (no problem). Upon inspection (after lapping), had a solid 1/8-inch concentric landing area. A broad landing area (contact surface) is good for heat flow from valve to block, to prevent "burnt valves". In the long run, valves with broad landing areas will last longer and seat better.

Machining the polishing and lapping disc
A good friend sent me this perspex slab all the way from Australia, and he has rightly been hounding me to get on and machine it into a disc that can be used as a lapping and polishing disc for horological work. The clock- and watchmaker's ideal polish is a "black polish", where not a single ray of light is reflected back at the eye when the work is tilted, resulting in an inky dead black surface, which also happens to have to be perfectly flat. NO rounded corners, not even slightly. Razor sharp edges, geometrically flat surfaces, with a dead black polish. It's one of those things horology is rightly proud of. It turns out that perspex is a very good material to help attain this - it's hard enough not to deform under the work, and yet is able to receive the grains of abrasive into its surface, creating a micro-lapping structure; successively finer grades of abrasive, then, should result in a finish on the metal workpiece where there are no scratches that are wider than the wavelength of light... I've been putting off doing the machining, partly because of not sorting out a proper spindle to hold the disc on. However, I remembered, after a pep talk (more like kick up the jacksie) by my Aussie friend, that I actually have all the necessary stuff to hand, and all my deferral activity was just that. There was no real reason not to get on with the job. The hefty lathe in the video is a Colchester Chipmaster, which can swing 11 inches over the bed, and is a very good machine <b>...</b>

The Physics of a Cat Lapping up Liquid - Part 1
This movie shows three lapping events of an adult domestic cat, Felis catus, during its normal drinking process. Tap water was mixed with a small amount of liquid yogurt to aid visualization. The video was recorded at 120 frames/s and is here shown slowed down four times. As the tip of the tongue comes in contact with the liquid surface, water adheres to the dorsal side of the tongue's tip. A liquid column forms when the tongue is rapidly lifted. The liquid column grows by inertia, until gravity induces its break-up through pinch-off. Jaw closure results in the capture and ingestion of part of this column.
