Tony Award Nominated Actress, Sanaa Lathan, sits down with Corey Chavous to discuss her career, the Essence Music Festival, and her new documentary on skin. *Skin is amazing: it covers our body, and reveals our soul. For many, skin is a symbol of pride, for others it's a canvas to tell a story - and for almost all it represents a heritage to be honored. Skin means something different to almost everyone you ask. As part of a Vaseline Cocoa Butter campaign, people around the globe were asked: "what does your skin mean to you?" "I am my instrument, you can't just leave yourself behind. There's a little of me in every character.... and yet... well-written characters have their own spirit about them." Time: 15 minutes /cook time:30 minutes/Total time: 45 minutes/ serves 6 2 tablespoons olive oil ½ cup onion (chopped) 3 cloves fresh garlic (cleaned and chopped) 1 fresh jalapeño pepper (de-seeded and chopped) 1½ lb. ground sirloin 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons chili powder ¼ cup black olives (pitted and chopped) ½ cup cherry or Roma tomatoes (chopped) 3 oz. pkg. Philadelphia Cream Cheese (cubed) 1 egg (beaten)/you can use 2 if you like it more thick 1 9" deep-dish store-bought pie shell 1 tablespoon yellow cornmeal ½ cup Kraft Sharp Cheddar Cheese (grated) 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro (chopped) First offput a lock on your screen door. Cause every man in your neighborhood is gonna be after you when they smell this here pie cookin! Then, set your oven on 375 degrees. Now, git yourself a big ol' non-stick fry pan and pour in the olive oil and heat it up on a medium fire. When its hot, add the chopped onions, fresh garlic and jalapeño pepper. Now, when them onions are translucent, add the chopped sirloin and brown. Then add all the spices the cumin, salt and pepper, coriander and chili powder. Once that's all mixed together in the pan, add the chopped black olives and tomatoes. Burial will be in Carriere Cemetery under the direction of McDonald Funeral Home. The Rev. Philip Chaples will officiate at the service. A native of Carriere, he was a Construction Foreman with Wallace C. Drennan, Inc. of New Orleans, La. and a member of First Baptist Church of Poplarville. Byron served honorably in Iraq as an elite member of US Army Engineer Explosives Detection K-9 Unit. He was an active member of the Mississippi Army National Guard. Byron was also a proud member and outstanding player with the Poplarville High School football, basketball, and baseball teams. He was a PRCC Wildcat cheerleader. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Glenda Sue Smith Fendley.
