Lighter, Faster, and Better. That's the New model of the Cold Steel American Lawman. I rightly criticized the previous version for being too heavy and I am stoked to report this version fixes that by dispenses with the unnecessary steel liners. Weight on the redesigned CS Lawman is now 4.4 oz. Other improvements include a radiused and rounded handle, deeper finger grooves, a solid clip, and seemingly faster deployment (might just be my perception). Other already-cool features soldier on: excellent high-traction G10 handle, great thumbstud (reversible!), good quality AUS8A steel (razor sharp from box, easy to sharpen, tough), 6061 aluminum backspacer, and the proven and ultra-strong Demko Triad locking mechanism. In the compact tactical blade POU, this blade will rock. Expect long term solidity out of this lock, even after rough use. Blade shape is still the very desired clip with an adequately strong tip. Blade centering is perfect in this example as well. And I will correct the video and say it should do so as well in EDC roles as well. If it's still too big or chunky for you, you might opt for the small American Lawman at just 2.6 oz. Value is very high if you can score it around $45 (for full sized, $40 US for small Lawman). About the only downside I can detect is the broad width of the design. But other than the new Cold Steel American Lawman completes a winning re-design of some of the company's best, hard use tactical folders and it provides amazing utility for the <b>...</b>

I wish I could say that I love the Cold Steel Mini Lawman but I don't. It has a several shortcomings that combine to somewhat kill my interest in the blade. First and as shown, the lockup on my sample has some wiggle in the up and down plane. Second, the knife while light (only 2.8 oz) is chunky. That's because it integrates the strong Triad-Lock® mechanism which necessitates the bulkier handles. Overral thinness is an important commodity in my EDC blade choices and it's missing in the Mini Lawman. Thirdly is the absurd placement on the pocket clip on the handle: mounted very low which creates a 1 inch protrusion during carry (shown). Again this is disadvantageus, creating possilbities for loss and blade discovery by observers of your person. Also, as discussed, re-location of the pocket clip (by the user) would be complicated and may be prevented by the handle screw locations. Fourth, again we have under clip issues with this Cold Steel knife; its raspy G10 handles provide great traction and feel good in hand but they have no place being under the pocket clip. It complicates knife insertion/extraction and shreds your pockets. Fifth, and I forgot to note this in the vid, the blade has a complete lack of jimping. Sixth and finally, the knife arrived rather dull out of package... a real let down given the usual sharpness levels of Cold Steel folding knives (usually excellent!). With some work, the 2.5 drop point hollow-ground AUS8A blade touched up to adequate sharpness <b>...</b>

What's the best cop blade? There are many good options to choose from as noted in my "BEST Tactical Folder Playlist." But first decide on which which criteria are more important for your POU: ultimate strength and defensive reach (and resultant damage to the bad guy) or more portability and higher utility use. I recommend siding with the latter if you, like most cops, are toting many pounds of gear on your Batman equipment belt. Most officers will use their knives for daily cutting chores and very seldom for emergency defensive use. Therefore a lighter, more compact blade usually pays dividends in daily carriage by lightening your loadout. This blade may or may not do that depending of what you classify as "heavy." The Cold Steel American Lawman is a strong, medium sized tactical folder the strikes a balance between these "Mobility versus Firepower" www.youtube.com considerations. Its blade is widely notched at the base to accommodate the Tri-Ad Locking mechanism pin, which is unusual and initially disconcerting (cosmetically only). The highly textured G10 scales provide excellent traction in hand. The pocket clip is adequate but rides over the rough G10 that promises to abrade your carry pocket. The 3.5 inch AUS8A drop point blade offers plenty of utility and some defensive capabilities as well. Its hollow grinding produces a razor sharp edge out of the box. Some downsides in the design that prevent a higher Nutnfancy rating however: slower deployment than many <b>...</b>

The new America Lawman is my favorite of Cold Steel's trifecta of exception tactical folders - the other two being the AK47 and the Recon 1. While all three are attractive blades, I chose the Lawman because of it's outstanding utility and carryability. Cold Steel's super-tough Tri-Ad lock is well represented in this offering, and was THE major selling point for me. Extreme G10 texturing, a great blade shape, a comfortable choke-up choil, deep pocket carry, Cold Steel's AUS 8 blade steel, and all around good ergonomics were icing on the cake. Cold Steel produces outstanding blades that don't break the bank, and the new American Lawman at around $50 is a great representation of that fact.
