Pipe Dreams -- Mary Jane Leach
Pipe Dreams (1989) was written for the organ in St. Peter's Köln, which has two sets of pipes at opposite ends of the church. Each rank has separate sounds and stops that can combine to create microtonal intervals. Pipe Dreams is a structured improvisation, exploring antiphony and the specific sounds of that organ, extra-musical as well as musical.. The tempos and exact notation are left open. Ornamentation occurs when the sound warrants it: ie, to not only obtain musical results, but to make extra-musical sounds occur. The weather affected the sound and action of this organ, changing every day, so realization changed daily. The melodic material is very simplistic, because that is what created the most interesting resultant sounds.

Bernard Leach - A Potter's World (Extract)
Bernard Leach is, without a doubt, the best known and most prominent of British studio potters. Born in Hong Kong, he was taken almost immediately to Japan by his grandparents. He came to England at the age of ten for schooling. In 1909 he returned to Japan to teach etching which he had himself learnt from Frank Brangwyn. After ten years of life in the East - both Japan and China - he met Hamada. The following year they both came to England and set up the Leach Pottery at St Ives. The years between the wars were hard for Leach; he spent much time re-building kilns, experimenting with materials, travelling - but not achieving much critical or financial success. It was not until after the Second World War, and the publication of his first book, A Potters' Book, that he became widely recognised as a master in his field. He continued to pot until 1972, but did not stop his ceaseless travelling. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London held an exhibition - The Art of Bernard Leach - in 1977, and in 1979 he died.

Japan Mountain Leech vs. Giant Earthworm
While hiking in rugged mountains of the Japan Southern Alps I happened upon a life and death struggle between a very large earthworm and an equally large Japanese Mountain Leech. This was my first leech encounter in Japan and at the time I knew little about this interesting animal. The Japanese Mountain Leech is called yama-biru in Japanese and is known scientifically as Haemadipsa zeylanica japonica. Mountain Leech are quite at home outside of water and are most often found within dark, moist forests. The animal is especially active during the monsoonal rainy season (when I took this video). Blood sucking leech will readily go after farmers and hikers and will eagerly pursue their prey using a strange form of locomotion in which they toss their bodies end over end in rapid pursuit. They can chew right through socks and are quite relentless in their efforts to get a blood meal. Leeches are even known to drop from trees upon unsuspecting passersby! While some Mountain Leech have mouths designed for sucking, others (like the leech in this video) must swallow their prey whole.

In Mashiko where Shoji Hamada came from there was quite a lot of destruction to kilns and potteries structures there as well as smashed pots. Well the Leach Pottery ( my grandfather Bernard Leach's pottery) in Cornwall England is launching an appeal to raise money to help the village of Mashiko. I am pasting here now some details of that for your interest and action if you feel like donating. The Leach Pottery launches earthquake appeal for Mashiko Village The trustees and staff of the Leach Pottery would like to express our great sadness at the recent catastrophe that has beset Japan. The Leach Pottery's historic and current links to Japan, dating back over a century, are of great importance to us and the friendship we have received from the Japanese people over the years has been unwavering. We have not forgotten the support we received from the people of Mashiko pottery village and members of the Mingei Association in 2008 when individuals collectively donated over £40000 towards rebuilding our pottery in St. Ives and we would like to offer them back the hand of friendship now. We are launching an appeal to raise funds for Mashiko which has been badly hit by <b>...</b>

You will need :- 1 small oil drum - ask your local garage. 1 small burner,pipe,clips,regulator. propane gas bottle.(hardware store) ceramic fibre (you may need to go around twice -you need 2 inches thick minimum-from your pottery supplier) Ceramic glue,not brick cement,glue for fibre blanket.
