While hiking in rugged mountains of the Japan Southern Alps I happened upon a life and death struggle between a very large earthworm and an equally large Japanese Mountain Leech. This was my first leech encounter in Japan and at the time I knew little about this interesting animal. The Japanese Mountain Leech is called yama-biru in Japanese and is known scientifically as Haemadipsa zeylanica japonica. Mountain Leech are quite at home outside of water and are most often found within dark, moist forests. The animal is especially active during the monsoonal rainy season (when I took this video). Blood sucking leech will readily go after farmers and hikers and will eagerly pursue their prey using a strange form of locomotion in which they toss their bodies end over end in rapid pursuit. They can chew right through socks and are quite relentless in their efforts to get a blood meal. Leeches are even known to drop from trees upon unsuspecting passersby! I found this leech (yama-biru) enjoying a blood meal on my foot while I was taking a break during a hike high in the mountains of central Japan. This video includes footage of the bloody wound the leech inflicted on my foot, so if you are shy of seeing blood you might not want to watch. In the Florida Everglades, a colony of larger-than-human-size, intelligent leeches is living in an underwater cave. They begin dragging local people down to their cave where they hold them prisoner and slowly drain them of blood. I encountered this animal while hiking in the rain among the mountains near Okabe, Japan (east coast, central Honshu) with my friend and co-worker Takaaki Futami. As we set out to climb a high and rugged peak near the coast, I commented to Takaaki that I hoped we might encounter a giant carnivorous leech on our outing. I was optimistic as my past two encounters with this animal had occurred while hiking on wet and rainy days in similar leaf littered forests. Only one hour into our hike I was delighted to spot the telltale brown and orange markings of a giant leech moving through the leaf litter at my feet. This was my first encounter with one of these animals while it was prowling for food as the previous two leeches I had seen were both busy ingesting giant Japanese earthworms as large as themselves when I found them (please see my YouTube video titled Japan Mountain Leech vs. Giant Earthworm to learn more). Takaaki and I were startled to see just how fast this animal could move when disturbed. I went on holiday over Christmas to Sri Lanka. We decided to stop off at various places and visited some dense rain forest areas. Here are some of my favourite clips from the jungle. Ignore the first clip. It's just somebody looking over the hotel wall at a load of people in the swimming pool. Leeches aren't nice. You might think of them as blood sucking slugs- they're more like stretchy rubber tubes which can travel surprisingly fast. They wait on leaves for people to walk past- one even landed on me when I walked under a tree. They can chase people as well. In short, they're not very nice and simply brushing past some grass will get some on you in high up, humid areas of Sri Lanka. They're incredibly clever and it reminded me too much of Morrowind to stop, look down and see a hoarde of them coming to attack me. I'm amazed I only got two on me, both of which I found and managed to get off (with the help of some guides). You have to be careful though- pulling them off will leave their teeth embedded in you. I used these funny critters to try to dissolve some of my extensive femoral deep vein clots (FDVT). This is the latest in a series of cutting edge techniques to deal with the problems of DVTs. They are also used for many other things including arthritis, skin diseases, cardiac problems, diabetes, inflammation, varicosities, surgical uses, pain due to circulation problems, and much more. So far I feel good about all of the previous ideas I have presented. Leeches have proved to be another step in the right direction for me. MY IDEA: That leech hirudin might be able to help dissolve the connective tissue matrix (ie. an old blood clot) that forms within a DVT. After two weekends of treatments with five leeches per weekend I was able to measure a significant improvement in my inline skating. The time period to exhaustion was much longer indicating either the blood is flowing more freely or the clot was beginning to organize (opening more micro channels) significantly more. The experience was interesting. The only drawback that I see is the learning curve while you learn the art of bandaging up the leech bites. Can be a little messy until you get the hang of that. The video was shot in the mountains surrounding Shizuoka City, Japan on the main island of Honshu at an altitude of roughly 2000 feet. The place where I found the leeches was a soggy bit of ground along an active stream surrounded by tall trees where little sunlight ever falls. On two previous occasions I had been bitten by leeches after walking through this grotto. I visited the location on a cool day in early June when I though the leeches might be less active, which I hoped would give me a better chances to film a single leech with less worry of a mass leech ambush. To attract a leech I simply stood still amidst the ground cover and waited for something to happen. I was delighted to see many interesting creatures while I waited: including a long flatworm and an ultra miniature frog. After roughly five minutes of waiting I spotting a solitary leech slowly inching its way towards me. When I first saw the leech it was roughly a meter away and making a beeline for my right foot. The animal did certainly seem to sense my presence as it did not alter its speed or course until it had climbed onto my shoe. Initially, the leech seemed frustrated by the material of my shoe and it actually took some time for it to locate a point of entry at a gap between the shoe and shoe tongue.
