Liberia

Liberia suffered from war and instability from 1990 through 2003 resulting in hundreds of thousands of lives lost and tremendous damage to Liberia's human and physical infrastructure. Liberia's legal system at all levels was left in tatters. Through the online portal at liberlii.org users of LiberLII will be able to access opinions of Liberia's Supreme Court, codified and un-codified legislation, agency regulations, concession agreements, court rules, treaties and an array of Liberian law resources. Information can be obtained through key word searches and by browsing LiberLII's libraries. Is Liberia land grab by foreign firms sowing seed of future conflict?-Africa Today-03-13-2012

Small farmers lose livelihoods as 'controversial' palm-oil producing multinational moves in. Much of rural Liberia's population lives on land that has been in the family for generations. Most people don't have the money to go through the costly and complicated process of acquiring deeds, so under Liberian law the government is the owner of all public land. Sando's land was not registered; therefore it belonged to the government. However, a report from the Centre for International Conflict Resolution (CICR), at Columbia University in the US, raises doubts about whether the future is quite so bright for the communities affected by the company's actions. The report studied the impact on communities of investments by four companies: Golden Veroleum, Sime Darby, ArcelorMittal and Putu Iron Ore Mining Corporation. The three-month study - based mainly on town hall meetings, focus group discussions and interviews with indigenous groups, public officials, UN staff, civil society activists, international organisations and corporate representatives - found that lack of consultation on the investment projects had resulted in "high tension" among communities. Investment has flooded into Liberia since President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf rid the country of its crippling foreign debt. She has brought peace and development to the nation after 14 years of devastating civil war. The country has signed natural resource deals with foreign investors, mainly in iron ore and palm oil, amounting to a ...

Hipco: Liberian rap eyes big time

In the Liberian capital there's a new beat in town: Hipco. A blend of US-style hip-hop and local English dialect, it's a sound gaining ground among the young. Brooklyn Park Fire Department Mission to Liberia

Brooklyn Park group back from Liberia When Brooklyn Park Fire Chief Ken Prillaman and other fire professionals arrived in Liberia, they found the only working fire truck in the country of more than one million people had broken down. The American group of fire executives and trainers from Brooklyn Park, Los Angeles and Maryland went to work to fix a pump and turn the tanker into a vehicle that could fight a fire. The Liberian firefighters were eager students, said Prillaman, who was part of a mission to train as many Liberian firefighters as possible in a four-day period. "Our team worked side by side with Liberian firefighters which gave us a perspective that I don't think we would have gotten otherwise," Prillaman said. Fire deaths in Liberia are not unusual. Candles are often used for light and the week before this group arrived, one fire killed three people. Prillaman helped organize the trip through his nonprofit, Give Them Hope Ministries. He says his group will be going back in July and will ship an ambulance donated by North Memorial and a fire engine coming from Boston. "This is a very long-term initiative," said Prillaman. "This may take five or eight years to have a semblance of a fire department that's capable of protecting the community." Brooklyn Park also sent the city manager, the mayor and a police official to Liberia on a separate mission, which the Brooklyn Park City Council approved. Since 10 percent of Brooklyn Park's population is Liberian, city ...
