Libyans express disappointment at government

Around 200 men staged protests in Martyr's Square in the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Friday, demanding justice for 15 soldiers who died in an ambush by loyalists of the late leader, Muammar Qaddafi, 2 days ago. The protesters demonstrated their disappointment with the interim government, urging the leaders to penalize those responsible for the attack that took place near Bani Walid, one of the last Qaddafi strongholds during the war. According to witnesses, the fighters were attacked with grenades and weapons when they came to the city from Tripoli to arrest a Qaddafi loyalist. One fighter said that they encountered road blocks, only to then be attacked from all sides, with shooting apparently coming from houses. At the same time, the Amazighs, Libya's ethnic minority, rallied on the other side of the square. They were demanding there be a representative of their community in the new cabinet, which was sworn in on Thursday. "Are you (Prime Minister, Abdurrahim al-Keib) a racist or is that a mistake? If that is a mistake go ahead and fix it. If you are a racist, its not what we had our revolution (for), to put a racist at the top of our government," one resident said. The Amazigh, or Berbers, faced oppression under Qaddafi's rule, and are concerned that the new government is overlooking their plight. Son of former senior Libyan official who faces assassination speaks to Lizzie Phelan

Independent journalist Lizzie Phelan who has been covering the Libyan crisis since it began speaks to Hamid Dorda, the son of Dr Abuzed Dorda. Once Libyan Prime Minister, Permanent Representative to the UN and head of intelligence, Dr Abuzed Dorda's life is now in grave danger. In contravention of international law and with human rights organisations and the UN itself turning a blind eye, Dr Dorda has suffered torture, inhumane and severe mistreatment and numerous attempts on his life since NTC forces detained him on September 11. His health is deteriorating and he remains untreated since October 25 for internal bleeding and broken bones. His family are being refused the right to visit him. Dr Dorda enjoyed a large base of popular support, being seen as one of the least incorruptible figures in libyan politics and society. If he is assassinated or left to die from his injuries, it will be a considerable blow for the already bleak prospects of a stable and just political future in Libya. .... An NGO sent me the following appeal. Below is the name of the woman that must be harassed if anything is to be done to help Dorda and hopefully find Zidan. Dramatic video of fighting aftermath in Libyan airport

Dramatic amateur video emerged on Monday purporting to show the aftermath of a skirmish that happened late last week between troops loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and rebel forces at Misrata airport. The video accessed via Youtube is thought to have been filmed over the weekend and there is no means of independently verifying it's date and authenticity. Fighting took place between Gadhafi loyalists and rebels at Misrata, Libya's third largest city 125 miles (200 kilometres) east of Tripoli, on Friday, according to residents. Each side now controls part of a sprawling air base on the outskirts of the city, and neither was able to make any gains in the latest sporadic fighting, they said. The footage shows buildings damaged by gunfire, while spent bullet shells and debris litter the runway. Also seen is a tank perched on top of a small airplane, used for training purposes. On Monday, clashes continued in Misrata. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

Corbett: Libya shattered, pieces dangerous

Relatives of the slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi are reportedly looking to The Hague with a 'war crimes' lawsuit against NATO. They accuse the Alliance of deliberately targeting Gaddafi's convoy, which they say posed no threat to civilians. NATO was only allowed into Libya by the UN solely to protect citizens. Meanwhile, the military alliance has postponed its preliminary decision to end its Libya mission by the end of this month, following calls from the interim government to stay on. Fresh clashes erupt in Libya

Clashes between local armed groups erupted just outside of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on Saturday killing at least seven according to a medic. On its second day, revolutionary forces from the port town of Zawiyah attacked targets with machine guns, grad rockets, and other forms of ammunition, near a military base in the rural area of Imaya which is inhabited by the large Wershifanna tribe. The fighting comes at a time when the interim government is trying to quash brewing tension and talk of tribal disagreements with loyalists of slain leader Muammer Qaddafi. The area under attack overlaps a main highway from Tripoli to the Tunisian border and oil and gas hubs close to Zawiyah. This bout of violence raises serious concern about the amount of armed people on the streets as the country is grappling with a fragile law and order situation following the fall of the Qaddafi regime and incidents like this could hinder its transition to democracy. In related news, Libya's next prime minister, Abdurrahim el-Keib pledged to set up a national army in efforts to disband militias, but has yet to announce a solid outline for a government. Rebel forces in Libya claim they are advancing in Colonel Gaddafi's home town of Sirte - one of the last loyalist bastions. Several thousand opposition fighters, backed by tanks and heavy weapons, have reportedly launched an offensive on the city. Russia says it's time to lift the UN-imposed no fly-zone in Libya, which was introduced to save civilians. Wild West Libya: 'Journos hunted, anarchy in streets'

After five-days of being on public display inside a meat market fridge, the slain former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has been buried. His body was taken to a secret location in the desert to prevent his grave becoming a shrine for sympathisers or being vandalised. State Terror: Deadly Libya strikes 'NATO policy, not mistake'

Rebels have stormed and looted Colonel Gaddafi's compound in Tripoli after three days of fighting in the Libyan capital. Angry crowds vented their anger at the portraits and luxuries at the compound - while the location of Gaddafi himself is still not known. He made his second radio address in the space of 24 hours, calling on his supporters to cleanse the capital. He claims that his retreat from the compound was a tactical move and promised to fight to the death. RT on Twitter: twitter.com RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com

LIBYAN REBELS CELEBRATE IN COMPOUND - 23.08.2011

LIBYAN REBELS CELEBRATE IN COMPOUND Libyan rebels are celebrating after finally breaching the walls of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's compound - seizing his personal possessions, including a hat and golf buggy Alex Crawford, inside the perimeter wall, spoke to rebel fighters as many roared with delight and fired their guns into the air. Fighters swept through Bab al Aziziyah's buildings after days of street battles in the Libyan capital. Amid the elation, one rebel said: "It's just unbelievable. All the people that have sacrificed for us, for this moment. We're in front of his compound and where is he? He's underground, he can't do anything. Where is he?" As more rebels they stormed into the buildings, ripping down posters and attacking the iconic statue of the hand holding a US Apache plane. One man found Col Gaddafi's gold-trimmed hat in his bedroom inside the compound and was wearing it as he told Crawford he planned to give it to his father. He said: "He has suffered a lot from Gaddafi. I am proud of this moment which the Libyans have waited for 42 years for." Others managed to find the leader's infamous golf buggy, in which he made a bizarre appearance earlier this year. They also set fire to Col Gaddafi's tent where, over the decades, he had hosted political leaders from around the world.
