Choosing a Comfortable IWB

Choosing an In-The-Waistband (IWB) holster can be a daunting task. When you carry a firearm all day, every day, you want to make sure it's going to be comfortable. Here are a few tips on what to look for in a holster to insure it will be comfortable.

The Clean-Up

One of the most relaxing parts about going to the range: the cleaning. I like the smell of Hoppes and sitting around talking to my husband and watching movies while I clean guns. It's some of my favorite times.

1911 Part 1: How to recognize a 1911 handgun

Often, I get asked what makes a 1911, a 1911 after an individual sees how many manufacturers make different models, sizes and features for the 1911. This video will point out the features that distinguish a 1911 from other handguns. This video is more centered on the external features of the 1911 and while I know that the series 80s have a fourth safety (the firing pin block) I will refrain from covering that until another video.

1911 Part 3: Disassembly.. Sort Of

I've been asked to do a disassembly video. While there isn't a video that could cover all 1911s, I hope to show that it is necessary to pay close attention to your manual and the manufacturer's suggested take down.

Knock Down or Stopping Power

The terms "knock down power" or "stopping power" are thrown around the gun industry with frightening frequency, especially since there really is no such thing when it comes to handgun cartridges. A human aggressor is stopped not by the "magic" bullet so much as by the psychological effects of being hit with a bullet and/or where that bullet hits and how much damage it does. Yes, larger bullets cause more damage and can achieve stopping effects more quickly than smaller calibers but there is no guarantee and certainly no "magic bullet" that will stop an aggressor no matter the distance or the general shot placement. There is also no hard evidence to suggest that, within the service calibers, there is a "superior" caliber when hollow points are utilized.

Dropping the Slide on the Empty Chamber of a 1911

After getting yet another reprimand for dropping my slide on the empty chamber of my 1911 I decided to get my facts straight. I emailed Wilson Combat and received this response: "Yes, dropping the slide on an empty chamber will cause the sear to bounce against the hammer hooks and will eventually crack the sear nose and/or hammer hooks. Once either or both have a crack or brake the chances of you pistol going full auto rise quickly. Dropping the slide a few times will not hurt the gun, too many times will. IF you want to let the slide rest against the slide, do so by hand and bring the slide into battery slowly. Thank you Nick M." So, there you have it.. From the horse's mouth (so to speak). If you see me do it again in my videos go ahead and yell at me!

Impromtu Range Trip with Lima

Here it is, the highly anticipated range video. A neighbor offered to babysit for us and so we took a very last minute trip to the range. The last time I was at the range was July of 2009 so it took me a little bit to get back into it. It was FREEZING! I had 40 minutes worth of video including some shooting from a rest that I just couldn't fit in here. As it is this video is a little long. I would really like to get back to the range again on a regular basis and get back to the skill level I once had. It was good to get back on the range however and I'm hoping to do it again before another six months passes. I start out with a .22 Kimber conversion kit on my husband's Les Baer here. 1:51 I'm shooting the Wilson Combat Professional in .45 ACP. 6:08 I switch to my husband's Les Baer TRS, .45 ACP. 8:50 I go back to the Wilson Combat.

Glock 19 Gen 4 Range Trip #2

Since posting my range video I have gotten a number of "tips" and "criticisms" and much "advice" about why I had the five failures I had. Everything from limp wristing to bad sights, faulty springs, new grip angles, bad ammo and hand placement was thrown at me. It was hotter than the dickens and my hands were so sweaty they kept slipping off the gun but other than that it was as typical a shoot as ever. I am receptive to all forms of improvement and so I considered all of these points carefully as I started shooting. I checked my grip again and again. I refocused on the front sight and told myself not to worry or care about where I was hitting. I checked my stance again and even used different ammo. I carefully considered what was advised to me about the grip angle and how I should hold my Glock. I adjusted my trigger control and let her fly. My slide failed to lock to the rear on empty with all three magazines I shot and on the last magazine I had another failure to feed. I haven't experienced this many failures with any gun in two and a half years. I've done some googling and found quite a few other complaints from Gen 4 17 and 19 owners complaining of slide lock and feeding failures. Apparently I'm not the only one and hopefully the problem will be addressed by Glock soon. However, it would be nice to get affirmation that it is not just me (ie shooter error). Either way, I'm sending my Glock to the range with my husband tomorrow to see if he has better success and I'm ...

Comment Comeback: Civilian vs Uniformed Carry and Children

Civilians who carry guns around their children have often been labeled as dangerous and unsafe. We are accused of not caring for the welfare of our children and the potential dangers of being armed around them. Conversely, photos of police officers and military personnel are sent through emails and put on websites as displays of protection, compassion and care. What difference does a uniform make? Why is it acceptable for a person in uniform to have a firearm around a child vs a concerned, loving, responsible and well trained adult?
