Chateaux of the Loire

The Loire valley includes historic towns such as Amboise, Angers, Blois, Chinon, Nantes, Orléans, Saumur, and Tours. The Loire Valley (French: Vallée de la Loire), spanning 280 kilometres (170 miles), is located in the middle stretch of the Loire River in central France. It comprises an area of approximately 800 square kilometres (310 sq mi). It is referred to as the Cradle of the French Language, and the Garden of France due to the abundance of vineyards, fruit orchards, artichoke, asparagus and cherry fields which line the banks of the river. Notable for its historic towns, architecture and wines, the valley has been inhabited since the Middle Palaeolithic period. In 2000, UNESCO added the central part of the Loire River valley to its list of World Heritage Sites. The architectural heritage in the valley's historic towns is notable, especially its castles, such as the Châteaux d'Amboise, Château de Chambord,château d'Ussé, Château de Villandry and Chenonceau. The châteaux, numbering more than three hundred, represent a nation of builders starting with the necessary castle fortifications in the 10th century to the splendor of those built half a millennium later. When the French kings began constructing their huge châteaux here, the nobility, not wanting or even daring to be far from the seat of power, followed suit. Their presence in the lush, fertile valley began attracting the very best landscape designers. In addition to its many châteaux, the cultural monuments ...

Chateaux of the Loire Valley - France

The châteaux, numbering more than three hundred, represent a nation of builders starting with the necessary castle fortifications in the 10th century to the splendor of those built half a millennium later. When the French kings began constructing their huge châteaux here, the nobility, not wanting or even daring to be far from the seat of power, followed suit. Their presence in the lush, fertile valley began attracting the very best landscape designers. Château de Valençay. By the middle of the 16th century, King Francois I had shifted the center of power in France from the Loire back to the ancient capital of Paris. With him went the great architects, but the Loire Valley continued to be the place where most of the French royalty preferred to spend the bulk of their time. The ascension of King Louis XIV in the middle of the 17th century made Paris the permanent site for great royal châteaux when he built the Palace of Versailles. Nonetheless, those who gained the king's favour and the wealthy bourgeoisie continued to renovate existing châteaux or build lavish new ones as their summer residence in the Loire. The French Revolution saw a number of the great French châteaux destroyed and many ransacked, their treasures stolen. The overnight impoverishment of many of the deposed nobility, usually after one of its members lost their head to the guillotine, saw many châteaux demolished. During World War I and World War II, some chateaux were commandeered as military ...

Cave home in Loire is charming bioclimatic troglodyte house

In the Saumur region of France there are over a thousand miles of underground tunnels and thousands of caves, known as "troglodytes", homes, hotels, restaurants, museums, wineries, farms (silkworms, mushrooms, snails) and even a disco and a zoo (for nocturnal animals like bats). What makes this land so perfect for underground dwellings is its very malleable rock. 100 million years ago, this part of France was covered by sea. When the water receded, it left a layer of tufa, or tuffeau, a type of limestone that turned out to be ideal for building castles, churches and homes in the surrounding area during the Middle Ages. All of this quarrying created lots of tunnels and caves that turned out to be ideal homes, especially for quarrymen. Up until the early 20th century, troglodyte living was still common in the area. Even entire villages, like that of Louresse-Rochemenier, were housed underground. In 2000, when Henri Grevellec retired from teaching, he bought an old quarry and moved into one of the old caves. On his property in Grezille, France, there are 6 caves that had once housed quarry workers centuries ago. The site was abandoned when Grevellec purchased it, but he cleared away the growth and renovated the caves himself. He put in a modern kitchen and bathroom and in his bedroom (at the far back of the cave) he added a skylight to improved air circulation and add a bit of light. Of the 6 original caves, one became a guest room (which he connected by tunnel to his main ...

BARGING THROUGH FRANCE PT 14 - LOIRE

In this episode of the video series about barging through France, host Richard Goodwin visits the rolling hills of the Monts Lyonnais where just to the South of Lyon, lives the remarkable Mr. Roland Dams. Mr Dams, a veterinarian, is known as the man who saved the 'coq Francais'. "He has devoted his life to saving the ancient strains of French of poultry," Richard tell us. "Holding a sick looking hen with a pale comb in his arms , he explains that there is nothing wrong with the bird and in fact it is the best sort of chicken that you can get. Roland explained that these two bachelor geese had taken charge of these orphaned goslings. He then showed me the various eggs from the different species and I was amazed by the different sizes of the eggs of the ancient strains. Genetically it can't be explained he tells me. He shows me a Le Mans chicken that he has been developing for 20 years. A huge bird and he says with a great future. I believe he tells me over a glass of the very best Bordeaux red wine that there is movement towards quality food. The work that Roland Dams does will one day stand us all in good stead." Richard moves on and describes his experiences: Andre Sablier told me why St. Etienne was famous for cycles and guns. St. Etienne was a mining down which produced very fine coal which was used for smelting to produce very high quality steel. I started in 1964 and I think that I am considered one of the best cycle makers in the world. I lifted the bike he had ...

Loire Castles - Chateau d'Amboise

At 6:50am, the Paristrip.com tourguide/driver (a handsome young man named Jerome) came to pick us up from our hotel in a minivan, with 3 passengers already comfortably seated (a young Brazilian student of architecture and a married couple from Mexico). After paying 540 euros (180per) for our Loire Valley castle tour, we climbed aboard and soon in 2 hours, we arrived at the first castle, Amboise. Built in the 11th century, the Chateau d'Amboise was seized by Charles VII of France, after its owner, Louis d'Amboise, was convicted of plotting against Louis X and subsequently pardoned after taking his chateau. Once in royal hands, the château became a favorite of French kings. King Francis I was raised at Amboise, which belonged to his mother, Louise of Savoy, and during the first few years of his reign, the château reached the pinnacle of its glory. As a guest of the King, Leonardo da Vinci came to the castle in December 1515 and lived and worked in the nearby Clos Lucé, connected to the château by an underground passage. Here at Amboise, he was buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert, adjoining the Château, which had been built in 1491--96. There is a memorial in the garden for the great inventor. Also in this castle, Henry II and his wife, Catherine de' Medici, raised their children along with Mary Stuart, the child Queen of Scotland who had been promised in marriage to the future French Francis II. One of the first truly "royal" residences of its kind, Amboise is a ...

Around the World (9) - Castles of the Loire - part 1 (France)

Castles of the Loire are architectural structures, in most cases built or substantially rebuild during the French Renaissance - the time when the French kings lived by the great river, its tributaries or near them (XV-XVI century). Most castles still keep their roots in the Middle Ages, preserving the architectural pattern of that time. Plenty of great architectural and historical monuments in this part of the Loire Valley in France are determined to enter into the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

Very unique flight over France & the Loire Valley castles, covered by snow

Une expérience *once in a life time* ... ====== This is some footages of a very unique flight over the Loire Valley Castles ("châteaux de la Loire"), in February 2012. As Europe was really freezing and covered by fresh snow, we took off from Paris (Toussus-le-Noble, LFPN) after a damn freezing preflight inspection and a careful taxiing over slippery parkings and taxiways. 30 minutes later, we were flying over magnificent Chambord Castle, then Cheverny and Chenonceau, and eventually Amboise, Chaumont and Blois. Despite a few turbulences over the forest, that was a totally once-in-a-lifetime flying experience, with a totally unique weather (QNH 1035 & CAVOK all over France).
