Madeira Portugal
Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago in the mid Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the Autonomous regions of Portugal, with Madeira Island and Porto Santo Island being the only inhabited islands. Madeira is part of Portugal, and as such, a part of the European Union, as an Outermost Region. Madeira was rediscovered by Portuguese sailors some time between 1418 and 1420. The archipelago is considered to be the first discovery of the exploratory period initiated by Henry the Navigator of Portugal. It is a popular year-round resort, noted for its Madeira wine, flowers, and embroidery artisans, as well as its New Year's Eve celebrations that feature a spectacular fireworks show, which is the largest in the world according to the Guinness World Records. Its harbour Funchal is important due to its commercial and passenger traffic and for being a major stopover for cruisers en route from Europe to the Caribbean. ( source Wikipedia )

Madeira Floods - Worst Storm in 100 Years
The Portuguese Island of Madeira was struck by a violent storm which has killed at least 32 people so far (20/02/2010) in what is to be considered Madeiras worst catastrophe of the last 100 years. Flooding of the entire city of Funchal and landslides pretty much all around the island, swept away cars and knocked down houses as this violent storm took the Island by surprise. ** Update 21/02/2002 ** The number of deaths has rised to 40. Over 100 injured and about 200 remain unknown. ** Update 21/02/2010 - 18h00 ** Number of deaths rises to 42. Schools will be closed during the next days. ** Update 22/02/2010 - 21h00 ** Official death tolls remain at 42. Authorities predict that there are 17 in the two bottom floors of a Shopping Center (Anadia), which is still full of water. Teams work night and day.

spectacular landing in madeira RWY 05 on a windy day
This is one of the most challenging airports that I`ve ever been. I`m landing in Madeira island airport (LPMA) for runway 05. This approach is similar to the old Hong Kong Kai Tak approach. The difference is that there is no IGS. It`sa VOR approach that will end when turning base leg. For fuel saving a CDA (constant descent approach) approach is used whenever possible according to flight manual. That will bring you close to the old Kai Tak approach. When on base leg instead of a chekerboard you have 2visual reference points to turn final. GELO and ROSARIO ponts. Winds are often turbulent as they come downhill. This one is really worth watching.
