Maurice

A happy ending for Maurice from the Merchant Ivory film starring James Wilby and Rupert Graves set to Dinah Washington singing "I Wish I Knew the Name of the Boy". Based on the posthumously published novel by EM Forster and set in Edwardian England. Maurice (James Wilby) struggles with his sexuality forming a loving but platonic relationship with Clive (Hugh Grant). This unfulfilled relationship falters when Clive decides to marry and Maurice falls for the more earthbound charms of Alec (Rupert Graves), Clive's gamekeeper.

I'm Declaring 3/22 "International Talk Like William Shatner Day"!

In honor of William Shatner's 78th birthday tomorrow, 3/22/09, I, Maurice LaMarche, am declaring March 22nd to be "International Talk Like William Shatner Day!" (Hey, we have "International Talk Like a Pirate Day", and Shatner inspired a helluva lot more kids to be like Captain James T. Kirk than any who wanted to be some smelly, toothless, "arrr"-spouting frickin' pirate). In fact, ya know what? It's not fair that this great holiday should fall on a Sunday! So, I further proclaim that, in any year when Mr. Shatner's birthday falls on a weekend (such as this year, 2009), ITLWS Day shall move to the immediately following Monday. So in reality, March 23rd is "International Talk Like William Shatner Day!" ! So, spread Shatner Cheer around the office TODAY!! Requisition stuff like you're talking to Scotty in Engineering. Treat your assistant like Yeoman Rand. Or Candice Bergen (on second thought... perhaps not). When you're getting that prostate exam today, pretend you're in sickbay having a Suarian brandy with "Bones". Go... for ...IT! My frieennd, my... small friend! Now, since talking like our hero is a bit more challenging than walking around going, "Arrr", I've included the following impromptu video tutorial for your edification, filmed by producer Bill Biggar, on a loooong drive to the airport on LA's fabulous 405 freeway. Enjoy, and remember, it's pronounced "sabotaaj", not, "sabotahj".

Hagen Quartet - Maurice Ravel - String Quartet in F - Assez vif, Très rythmé (2/4)

The second movement of 28 year-old Ravel's Quatuor à Cordes. He is said to have been meticulous in his writing, and, finally, a group of musicians have matched his efforts in terms of attention. This is, in my opinion, the best performance and recording of this piece. The second movement is possibly the most known, as audiences remember the pizzicato opening; its usage in media, such as for the film "The Royal Tenenbaums" (W. Anderson) and as trailer music for films such as "Be Kind Rewind" (M. Gondry) also furthers its memorability. Assez vif introduces two new melodies; a rhythmic melody and a contrasting "sung" melody, which is both graceful and heroic. It is as though these are character motifs. Hagen Quartet: First Violin - Lukas Hagen (Austria) Second Violin - Rainer Schmidt (Germany) Viola - Veronika Hagen (Austria) 'Cello - Clemens Hagen (Austria) Concert hall - Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria. Hagen Quartet - Maurice Ravel - String Quartet in F - Allegro moderato, Très doux (1/4)

The first movement of 28 year-old Ravel's Quatuor à Cordes. He is said to have been meticulous in his writing, and, finally, a group of musicians have matched his efforts in terms of attention. This is, in my opinion, the best performance and recording of this piece. Allegro moderato introduces the main theme to be repeated in movements III and IV. The atmosphere developed is one of warmth and a contrasting vastness. The last 30 seconds always gave me the impression of falling asleep, once again surrounded by warmth. Hagen Quartet: First Violin - Lukas Hagen (Austria) Second Violin - Rainer Schmidt (Germany) Viola - Veronika Hagen (Austria) 'Cello - Clemens Hagen (Austria) Concert hall - Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria.
