Machinist 1942
In the year 1942 may father had a Machine shop in our Basement. There was a war on and we mad aircraft parts for the Glen L Martin corporation which was later Martin Marrietta and still later Gruman Martin Marietta. My Brother was serving his machinist apprentice ship at Bethlehem Steel Company. When he finished his four years he went into the Navy as a Machinist Mate. All of us kids worked some in the shop and made a little spending money. My father worked part time at home and full time as a machinist at Bell Telephone. The Government froze him in his job for the duration of the war so he was not able to work full time at home. It was possible to go to prison for leaving your job. At the very least if a man were young enough he would be drafted into the service. No one complained as most thought it was their patriotic duty to work at their defence job as they were called. Everyone was required to work six days a week and got paid time and a half for Saturday. Everyone had a big bank account as there was not much you could buy with the money. At the end of the war everyone bought a new house and a new car. The narration on this video is a bit hokey but it was made for school children. Basement Machinist: Steam Engine Project
This is a project i made on my mill / drill machine in my basement. Everything is done by hand, ie without digital readouts, numerical control, etc. The project has been put on hold until i order a new boiler Wilesco D 10 steam engine with mirror polished and nickel plated boiler, diameter 1.75 in, length 4.5 in, boiler capacity 9.4 in, with water gauge glass. Boiler house true to life, colored and copper plated, with embossed brick type walls, 2 footbridges. Double-action reversible brass cylinder with flywheel, spring loaded safety valve, dome whistle, flywheel of 3.0 in diameter with grooved pulley, centrifugal governor, steam jet oiler. All condensed water is collected in a gathering tray below the smoke stack and the chimney smokes just like the original. Finely painted metal base plate 7.75 in x 10.0 in. Height, including smoke stack, 9.0 in, Weight: 2.4 lbs.

Step inside our modern shops - equipped with both conventional and CNC (computer numeric controlled) machines, including lathes, milling machines, drill presses, cylindrical and surface grinders, as well as a bench work area. Housed in the NAIT Sandvik Coromant Centre for Machinist Technology, the goal of the program is to provide you with all skills you need to work as a Journeyman in Alberta. Upon completion of the program you should be able to complete any task and meet any challenge that you might come across in a machine shop. The first year of training is all about basics. You learn how to operate a lathe, a drill press, a bench grinder, and a power cut-off saw, and develop hand skills such as filing, measurement, and layout. Theory class covers trade terminology, standards, screw threads, lubrication, coolant, rigging, math, and blueprint reading. The focus in the second year shifts to milling machines. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines are introduced, and screw threads and lathe work are explained in more detail. You build upon the math and blueprint reading skills learned in year one. Grinding and gearing are the main topics in year three, although boring mills, jig boring and grinding, broaching, and jigs and fixtures are covered as well. You are given extensive training in the operation of a CNC lathe. In math you learn trigonometry and math techniques needed for CNC programming. Brad Anderson came Center Stage to talk about his film "The Machinist." The interview was recorded in 2004. Trevor Reznik is a lathe-operator who suffers from insomnia and hasn't slept in a year. Slowly, he begins to doubt his sanity as increasingly bizarre things start happening at work and at home. Haunted by a deformed co-worker who no one seems to think exists, and an ongoing stream of indecipherable Post-It notes he keeps finding on his fridge, he attempts to investigate what appears to be a mysterious plot against him and, in the process, embroils two women in his madness. Commentary by Brad Anderson The Machinist is a dark, moody thriller. It is the story of a man running from a guilty conscience that is literally consuming him alive, uncertain, unaware even, of what crime he's committed. Its literary models are the classic fiction of Kafka and Dostoievsky. Its film touchstones are Hitchcock, Polanski and Lynch. In other words, it is a story of overwhelming paranoia and foreboding. The look of the film was inspired by the austere expressionism of early horror films - like THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI, NOSFERATU, and VAMPYR and the shadowy films of producer Val Lewton like I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE and THE SEVENTH VICTIM. We hope to create a "subtle nightmare" with this film, one that pulls its dramatic suspense and horror from everyday situations.
