www.ntv.co.ke It is emerging that the government and other private sector initiatives to assist the needy are not adequately addressing the plight of drought-stricken residence of Mandera. Mandera East MP Hussein Ali says the government appears to be keener with plans for a repeat census in the region instead of feeding those suffering from hunger and lack of water. He was speaking while receiving an assortment of food donations from a Qatari family in Mandera Town, where distribution of the foodstuff turned chaotic.

Those with the first generation cards are unable to transact business in banks and some government offices. In Mandera West District, residents have lost hundreds of livestock and some residents have been constantly on the move in search for water and pasture. The six, two of them education officials were ambushed as they travelled to Mandera town to pick up KCSE examination papers. Inside Somalia, Kenyan forces encountered their toughest gun battle yet in which they killed 9 Al Shabaab militants. Two soldiers were injured in the fight in Tabda area as the forces inched closer to the town of Afmadow. NTV's John Allan Namu has that report.

While Kenyan troops were battling the Al Shabaab inside Somalia, a mortar hulled at a vehicle transporting KCSE examination papers to Lafey district near Mandera left at least 4 Kenyans dead in the a midday attack, suspected to have been orchestrated by the same terror group. Among the dead were a district education officer and a school principal. North Eastern Provincial Commissioner James Ole Serian says security personnel are now pursuing the suspected gang whose members escaped into Somalia after the incident. And in Nairobi, Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere held a press conference and once again warned Kenyans to be extra vigilant against the radicalisation of Kenyan youth returning from Somalia. Tension remains high in the Northern Kenya town of Mandera as residents continue to flee their homes in their thousands. Though there is relative calm, the town remains pretty much deserted as some 35000 people have already fled. Citizen Tv has obtained exclusive footage indicating foreign militants could be launching attacks into Somalia from the northern town of Mandera. This, even as the government dismisses these reports saying that the fighting is not within Kenyan territory but in Somalia.. The Kenya red cross has confirmed that two Kenyans have so far died and 19 others seriously injured in the attacks that broke out last Wednesday . Sheila Sendeyo has the latest from Mandera.

Five more people have been injured on the fourth day of fighting in the Somali border town of Bulla Hawa, a kilometre away from Mandera town in Kenya. According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, the number of casualties has now risen to 15, with one woman confirmed dead. Mandera town council officials, including Mayor Mohamed Adan Khalif, claim that foreign troops are firing into Somalia from Mandera and the resultant retaliatory attacks by Al-Shabaab militia has forced scores to flee from the town. The claims have however been rubbished by North Eastern PC, James Ole Serian, who says the fighting is not taking place within Kenyan territory, but in Somalia.
