Of all the strange things to discover under a bridge in London, on a day scouting for interesting locations to film, Matt came across the incredible Marques Toliver who was busking one afternoon in late autumn. Mesmerised for the entire set, Matt was (and still is!) in complete awe of Marques' soulful sound. Despite his busy schedule both here and in his native US, Marques was really keen to do a session. Fast-forward a couple of months... Following signing with Transgressive Management and an acclaimed performance on Later with Jools Holland, we managed to score an evening of Marques' precious time to try and capture his passionate performance. The stunning setting for the session was All Hallows By The Tower, an often overlooked gem of a church located, ironically, by the Tower of London. With a history dating as far back as 675 AD, it's main chapel and crypt lent an amazing backdrop and acoustics for Marques' voice. Special thanks go to Angela Poppet for allowing us to use such a special space. If you're ever in the Tower Hill area, be sure to visit this beautiful church. (www.ahbtt.org.uk) Marques gave us a performance so intimate it moved us all... so much so Bea admitted to tearing up at more than one point! Lucky Matt's steady hands didn't fail him! Following my upload of 'CanAan / Butterflies Are Not Free', I'm afraid this is my only other recording from Marques Toliver's 4-song set as Bat For Lashes' support act at this gig. Again, if some kind soul (perhaps even the great Mr Toliver himself, given his previous perfectly legitimate interest in when I was going to post these vids) could please oblige me by pointing out the actual title of this song, Id be delighted to update this vid's title accordingly. This great performance was potentially even good enough to cause the reigning queen of the autoharp, Natasha Khan aka BFL, to look to her own laurels, if only for a while! Just before I started recording this, Marques asked some off-stage assistant to produce his autoharp chord sequence notation sheet for this song, which they did. That's what he's consulting at the start of this vid (hence why I can be heard muttering something about his chords; and no I wasn't referring to corduroy!) BTW You might want to check out Natasha's warm tribute to Marques at the start of my vid of her brilliant 'Horse And I' later that evening. She'd taken him as her guest to the Brit Awards earlier that week (where she was up for the Best British Female award again, only to be robbed IMHO by Lily Allen). Perhaps I should caution the easily shockable about a naughty reference to Lady Ga Ga there, but that should not detract from one's appreciation of Marques's unquestionable artistic gifts as a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist etc <b>...</b>

Heres the jaw-droppingly brilliant opening piece from the exceptionally-talented Brooklyn-based artist Marques Toliver's 4-song set , supporting Bat For Lashes that night. Since I've seen 2 alternative titles to this song on at least a couple of YT vids, I'm hedging my bets by including both titles here (with the 'CanAan' title spelled in that uniquely letter-cased way). If someone could kindly point out which title is correct, I'll happily amend mine. My apologies for the occasionally obtrusive whir of my new cams zoom mechanism, & other minor 'noises off' in this vid (which I believe thankfully isn't noticeable on my other Marques vid - which I've also just posted - nor on my BFL vids, though at least in the latter case this may well be cos BFL's louder / presumably more ambiently-amped music drowns it out). If I'd had time to conduct more thorough tests with my brand new cam before-hand, I'd have kept the zooming down to an absolute minimum here... I'll also take this opportunity to apologise to Marques for only having recorded 2 of his 4 performed songs (since I was trying to save my one & only camera battery's power for BFL). My final apology is for taking this long to upload these vids. This was partly cos it took me a couple of weeks just to work out how to upload vids to YouTube in glorious HD if they were shot in AVCHD Lite format (see my original non-HD version of BFL's 'Howl' which I've left up as justification for the delay waiting til I'd finally found a <b>...</b>
