DAVID MASLANKA: "Morning Star"

Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1943, David Maslanka studied at Oberlin College with Joseph Wood. He later did graduate work at Michigan University with renowned band composer H. Owen Reed. Maslanka today is probably America's premier wind composer, with many short works for wind ensemble and, particularly, a series of Symphonies for Band which we at Albany are proud to have in our catalog. This disc continues the series of Maslanka works with the Illinois State University Symphonic Winds under Stephen K. Steele, in addition to other highly acclaimed recordings featuring many other significant composers. Albany TROY1130 visit www.albanyrecords.com to see all of our recordings of wind ensemble music. A world premiere recording by one of America's most inspired composers. The major work on this recording of music for wind ensemble by David Maslanka is Unending Stream of Life. Inspired by the hymn tune, All Creatures of Our God and King, Unending Stream of Life consists of seven songs for wind ensemble, each embodying the original tune, or relating to it in some way. The title comes from the Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. CONTENTS David Maslanka, composer Morning Star Illinois State University Symphonic Winds, Stephen K. David Maslanka - Symphony No. 4 - TMEA All-State Symphonic Band 2010-2011

The 2010-2011 Texas All-State 5A Symphonic Band performing Symphony No. 4 by David Maslanka, conducted by Gary Green. This triumphant symphony is both a haunting and thrilling journey through the mind of David Maslanka. Incredibly touching yet also somewhat dark, this symphony pulls towards the dramatic resolution at the end. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful symphonies, and an excellent performance. Give Us This Day by David Maslanka

This is aptly subtitled as it is indeed a major work of substantial content in a two-movement setting. Using the hymn stated in the title, Maslanka has constructed a work both expressive and powerful that fully utilizes the capabilities found in the modern wind ensemble. An accomplished work worthy of study and performance. Complete Performances by Trade Winds, Daniel Schmidt, Conductor
