Last year, we decided to try something completely different by inviting six regular consumers to do a comparison test of three popular midsize sedans — without the sponsorship of a specific manufacturer. They poked and prodded each car using the same criteria Edmunds editors use when evaluating a vehicle. The result was an enlightening experience for the consumers involved, the Edmunds.com editors and, judging by feedback, the readers at home. For the sequel, we rounded up three economy sedans: the two best-selling models (Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic) and the one we consider to be the best (Mazda 3). We also invited a fourth dark-horse contender to the party, but the Mitsubishi Lancer that showed up featured a fancy stereo, a sunroof and a $3000-higher price tag. It was disqualified before the test started for being too far out of the price range. As such, the remaining three contenders were priced within $479 of each other, giving our testers the chance to see how much equipment each brand provides for basically the same amount of dough. It gets all the usual upgrades you would expect in a new compact sedan — more power, more room, new features — yet it remains a straightforward yet sporty compact sedan. At 180.7 inches in overall length, the 2010 Mazda 3 is about 3 inches longer than its predecessor, yet it rides on the same 103.9-inch wheelbase as before. The width is unchanged, while the height is up a couple tenths of an inch. There are only modest changes under the hood. The base model Mazda 3 i uses the same 2.0-liter inline-4 engine as before. It generates 148 horsepower and 135 pound-feet of torque and comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission. The upgraded "s" model now gets a slightly larger 2.5-liter inline-4 rated at 167 hp and 168 lb-ft of torque. It comes standard with a six-speed manual. I made this CAI for my 2008 Mazda3 1.6L. Ived constructed this CAI using radiator hose(2.5" inside diam., commonly used on trucks), 2.5" aluminum pipe (which would house my MAF and vacuum hose) and 3" Simota Air Filter. I used hose clamps to hold them together and to connect it to the throttle. Also, I used an Epoxy Clay Steel to mold the flange on the aluminum pipe for the MAF and 2 bolts to hold down the MAF in place. The Epoxy clay hardens like rock and sticks to the aluminum well, it also can withstand high temp. I routed the rubber hose down at the back of the front bumper, where I placed my Air filter. This way it can suck colder air which is the main goal of CAIs. Cold air intake Principle Aftermarket air intake systems are among the most common and least expensive methods to increase horsepower. It is a simple bolt-on kit that consists of a conical air filter fixed onto an inlet pipe. When it is installed, the inlet pipe starts from the top of the engine and makes its way down to the outside of the engine bay, and the conical air filter is fixed onto the lower end of the pipe. The conical filter can now breathe the air beneath the engine, which is cooler than the air being brought in by the stock air box. This is why the setup is called the cold air intake system. Cool air is denser in oxygen molecules than warmer air, resulting in a more powerful combustion when mixed with fuel. This is an informational video of how to take off an OEM rear sway bar and replace it with an aftermarket H&R rear sway bar onto a 2007 Mazda 3 "S" 5 door (hatch). Note: when doing this install, the wheels must be at ride height. So, the vehicle can be raised by a flat alignment style rack, or place the rear of the vehicle on ramps and securely chock the front wheels for safety.
