BMW and SGL Carbon want to invent the car of the future with the help of a synthetic material called carbon fiber (CFK). It's heat resistant, stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum. That makes it ideal for electric cars. BMW plans to launch its 'Megacity Vehicle' e-car in 2013. BMW already makes parts of its M3 and M6 cars out of carbon, including the roofs and mudguards. But this state-of-the-art material is also a lot more expensive than steel and aluminum.

Also known as the MegaCity Vehicle, BMW plans to sell up to 30000 units in its first full year of sales in 2014. BMW launched the new 'i' sub-brand late last month under the tag line "Born Electric". Unveiling of the i3 production version along with the i8 hybrid supercar will take place in 2013. Both models will be built at the Leipzig plant and ride on the "LifeDrive architecture" which has an aluminum chassis and a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell. The i3 will produce well over 100 kW (134 bhp / 136 PS) via electric motors. Described by BMW as futuristic premium mobility, the i3 is expected to be priced over €40000.

The music for the new BMW i brand trailer was especially created by renowned Hollywood composer, Abel Korzeniowski. He became known for his music in Tom Ford's directing debut, "A Single Man", which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Already in the first BMW i brand trailer, the piece "Swimming" from that film can be heard. Korzeniowski's compositions have their own unique style. He creates a sophisticated blend of classical orchestral elements with electronic sounds and modern ambient music. "The whole concept BMW i really inspired me ... you get the impression of a new but familiar technology, not a classic invention concerns, but a very human technology. Just like the message 'Born Electric'." explains the composer Abel Korzeniowski. All New 2011 BMW i8 Concept
The BMW-i brand is here. The Bavarian automaker has introduced the new 'green' sub-brand ahead of its Frankfurt motor show debut in September. First up is the BMW i3 Concept - the first series-production all-electric vehicle by the brand. Based on the previous Mega City Vehicle concept, this new urban cruiser comes with an electric motor mounted on the rear axle which produces an output of 125 kW/170 hp and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. The i3 accelerates from 0 to 60 km/h (37 mph) in under four seconds and reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in around eight seconds. On the other end of the spectrum comes the i8 Concept, a plug-in hybrid sports car with serious frugal instincts. It features the same electric motor as in the i3, but this time mounted at the front axle, coupled with a 1.5 liter, 3-cylinder gasoline engine turbocharged to deliver a power quotient of 164 kW/220 PS and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque which drives the rear wheels. Top speed on the i8 is electronically-limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). It can travel up to 35 km (20 miles) on electric power alone and fuel-economy comes in at under 3 liter/100 km (94 mpg imp.) Distinguishing the BMW-i brand is the new construction principles at work on the i3 and i8 Concept models. BMW calls it LifeDrive and it is comprised of two modules.
