Nellie Melba - Lo, Here The Gentle Lark

Red Seal 88073 take 3 recorded 8/23/1910 music by Henry Rowley Bishop flute obbligato by John Lemmone lyrics Lo, here the gentle lark, weary of rest, From his moist cabinet mounts up on high, And wakes the morning, from whose silver breast The sun ariseth in his majesty; Who doth the world so gloriously behold That cedar-tops and hills seem burnish'd gold. Venus salutes him with this fair good-morrow: 'O thou clear god, and patron of all light, From whom each lamp and shining star doth borrow The beauteous influence that makes him bright, There lives a son that suck'd an earthly mother, May lend thee light, as thou dost lend to other.

Dame Nellie Melba (1861-1931)

I've put this video together, as much as anything, to gather up all the tiny fragments of film footage that exist of the great Australian soprano, Dame Nellie Melba (1861-1931). The first audio track I've used is one selected from a number of original masters recently discovered in a vault in Hamburg, Germany, in 1904. Choosing 'Swing low, sweet chariot' may initially seem strange when the great diva made a large range of recordings of, shall we say, more 'elevated' music. But it is in this master in particular that Melba seems very up close and personal to the microphone - she is so clear and 'there' that you can hear subtleties and qualities in her voice that were not accessible till now. This may in part be due to the fact that it was recorded at home - Cumberland Place - with only the piano accompaniment of Ronald Landon. And that the lesser dynamics of such a song, with respect to many operatic arias, means the singer did not need to step or be away from the microphone to prevent the distortions on disc involved with large volume, particularly with high notes. The master was made only to be heard for her father, and so this early recording has not been heard before. The second audio track is the initial part of her Farewell Speech at Covent Garden in 1926 and gives a sense of her speaking voice. You note as you listen that Melba is a strong and confident public speaker - she is in command the proceedings. Heatherington tells in his biography that at one point during ...

Melba Moore - Falling 1986

Melba Moore's Falling from the 1986 CD "A lot of love" gotta admire that note :) 3:26 Producer - Gene McFadden Written-By - F. Gold , G. McFadden Biography by Craig Lytle There were early signs that Melba Moore would become an entertainer. The most obvious motivation was her mother, Bonnie Davis, who was also a successful singer. Witnessing the success that her mother endured, Moore knew the entertainment industry would not escape her. The world of performing arts was formally introduced to her by way of dance lessons at the age of four. Moore's mother impressed upon her that "if you don't touch people's hearts, it doesn't mean anything." Her stepfather would also become an instrumental figure in the development of her early career. All her siblings were musically inclined. Melba's interest was dance. However, her stepfather insisted that she learn the piano. Against her will, she conceded -- and to her benefit. She gained much admiration for the blues and jazz pianists. Upon graduating from college, she became a music teacher, which she found very fulfilling. Nonetheless, Moore's affinity for the entertainment industry persisted. Her stepfather, also a musician, gave her invaluable advice and guidance. He sensed his stepdaughter's irresistible urge to be in the entertainment industry, so he began to show her the ropes. The results landed Moore jobs singing jingles and background vocals. She hit it big when she joined the cast of the Broadway musical Hair. One day while ...

Enrico Caruso & Nellie Melba - O Soave Fanciulla (1906)

The two greatest of greats from the golden ages of the Opera, Caruso and Melba, sings a famous duet from La Boheme, "O Soave Fanciulla". Recorded in 1906. This is the only German Pressing record in my collection. I think it was released in early-1910s (Pre-WWI). Played on my Victrola with a Mica Soundbox. Although I like this version, I prefer the unpublished 1912 version of this song with Caruso and Geraldine Farrar. (I will upload this for comparison)

Melba Moore - Pick Me Up I'll Dance ( Disco 1978 )

With the help of writers McFadden And Whitehead and The Bee Gees, Melba Moore released some fabulous disco music and this is one of my favorites. This is a special extended remix by John Luongo of the track originally released on the LP Melba from 1978. This LP seriously needs to reissued on CD.

Lillo Thomas & Melba More - All Of You 1984

Lillo Thomas. (born 1961, Brooklyn, New York, United States), is an American former Olympic-qualifying athlete and later a soul musician. He reached the peak of his success as a recording artist in the 1980s. His most famous songs include "Sexy Girl" and "I'm in Love." Prior to his recording career he was on the US track and field team. As an athlete he set the world record for the 200 meters at the age of sixteen. He qualified for the 1984 Olympics, however he was unable to attend after being involved in a car accident in Brazil. Thomas left athletics behind for music, and toured with comedian Eddie Murphy in 1985. He became a successful session vocalist, doing vocals on releases by Evelyn "Champagne" King, Kashif, James Ingram, George Benson, and Melba Moore, among others, while also writing "Mind Up Tonight" for Moore. Thomas released his first album in 1983. His albums were produced by Kashif and Paul Laurence Jones III. He landed his own solo recording contract with Capitol Records, and began getting singles on the charts. "Your Love's Got a Hold on Me" was his first Top 20 R&B single in 1984, and Thomas enjoyed his biggest year in 1987 with three Top Ten R&B hits. "I'm in Love" reached number two and remains his most successful single. Lillo Thomas collaborated with Laurence on songs recorded by Freddie Jackson and Melba Moore. In 2010 he released his first album of all new material since 1987, "Come And Get It" on the Fitingo Music label. He has also successfully ...

Melba Moore - Loves Coming at Ya 1982

Great quality video recorded live from Top Of The Pops 1982. Beatrice Melba Smith (born October 29, 1945), known by her stage name, Melba Moore is an American disco, R&B singer and actress. She is the daughter of saxophonist Teddy Hill and R&B singer Bonnie Davis. Moore began her performing career in 1967 as a member of the original cast of the musical Hair along with Ronnie Dyson and Diane Keaton. Moore replaced Keaton in the role of Sheila. In 1970, Moore won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in Purlie (she portrayed Lutiebelle). She would not return to Broadway afterwards until 1978 when she appeared (as Marsinah) with Eartha Kitt in Timbuktu!, but left the show after a few weeks and was replaced by Vanessa Shaw. Following the success of Purlie, Moore landed two big screen film roles, released two successful albums including 1970's I Got Love and Look What You're Doing to the Man and co-starred with actor Clifton Davis in the then-couple's own successful variety television series in 1972. Both Moore and Davis revealed that the show was canceled after its brief run when their relationship came to an end. Moore's career faced problems after Moore's managers and accountants left her in 1973. Moore returned to Newark and began singing for benefits. Her career picked up after meeting record manager and business promoter Charles Huggins following a performance at the Apollo Theater in 1974. Marrying in 1975, Moore and Huggins ...
