Most probably Tolla van der Merwe's first appearance on TV. Here it is with English subtitles. It used to be quite common for South Africans to hang out at a barbeque and to tell stories -- considering the lovely weather in that part of the globe. Over time these stories tended to get longer and more detailed, and a whole sub-culture of storytelling developed, especially in the rural areas. When TV belatedly appeared (only in 1976), PG du Plessis (a writer) and Jan Spies (a storyteller) launched an Afrikaans TV series called "Spies en Plessié -- Met Permissie" (Spies en Plessié -- With Permission) to try and capture some of these tales (and the colorful characters who told them) before the practice would die out completely. Tolla van der Merwe was one of the interesting people who appeared on this program.
