Seeing Where the Microwaves Are in a Microwave Oven

Microwaves are absorbed by wires creating current in the wires which can drive a neon lamp like this guy en.wikipedia.org I drilled a grid into a piece of plastic and slipped in the bulbs, leaving the wires to hang out like antennas. As the plate turns, the bulbs go into and out of places where the microwave energy is denser, illuminating the bulbs. No, it doesn't seem to hurt the microwave. You can find out more about how to make this by going to kossover.squarespace.com Edits: I do seem to suggest that microwaves are only absorbed* by things that conduct electricity. That's not true, of course. The changing electromagnetic field of the microwaves will oscillate anything that has a charge or is polar. I was trying to point out that microwaves can move electrons in wires. Even slightly salty water does seem to heat faster in my poorly controlled experiments, though. "Absorbed" isn't quite the correct term, I know. Oh, and kids, don't try this at home without your parent's permission. Many things do not like going into a microwave and will catch fire or spark or both. Your parents will be mad, and the fire department will be annoyed as well. Grape + Microwaves = Plasma

When a grape is cut nearly in half and placed in a microwave, plasma is produced. Please use caution if attempting this experiment: don't leave the microwave on for too long, make sure the area is well ventilated, and stand back. Remember the contents will be very hot afterwards.

PEEP WARS

It's almost Easter; and can only mean one real thing, those awfully delicious marshmallow peeps hit the stores, and in tremendous quantities! Here is something you can do very easily using those tasty treats. Take two of em, put a toothpick in each, place em on a plate, and throw em in the microwave for a minute. Sit back, not too close to the microwave (they say that is bad for you), and watch the battle begin! www.ineedtostopsoon.com

1975 NASA JPL Goldstone Demo of Wireless Power Transmission

The June 5, 1975 NASA JPL Goldstone Demonstration of high power long distance wireless power transmission successfully transmitted 34kw of electrical power a distance of 1.5km at an efficiency of greater than 82%. At the time, it was the world record for high power long distance wireless power transmission, and it may remain the world record yet today.

More Microwave stuff

What happens when you take something that's already on fire and THEN NUKE IT!?!?!??!?!? Watch to find out. Anyone who took Chemistry class and witnessed the glowing hydrogen gas in a vacuum tube is familiar with this phenomena. When waves of electromagnetic energy strike an electron in a gas, they cause the electron to jump up to a higher molecular orbital than the one it was previously in. When the electron falls back down, it releases a photon of energy equal to the energy difference between the original energy level and the one it was ionized up to. What we are seeing is electrons in CO2 and CO gas (produced by the burning toothpick)jumping up to higher levels as they are struck by microwaves and falling back down, emitting electromagnetic waves that fall within the visible spectrum of light (hence, the glow). IT'S SCIENCE IN THE MICROWAVE!!! Somebody call Bill Nye.
