The Midnight Circus - Complicated
The video for 'Complicated' follows a young woman who, through a series of incidents, finds the strength to leave an abusive relationship. The idea for the video came about from the stuttering effect used in the chorus of the song. A test video was edited so that the image of the singer stuttered in the same fashion as the song and although the stuttering images were pleasing aesthetically, they held no allusions to the narrative of the rest of the video. The next test saw the inclusion of the images of the beaten-up singer, which created a whole story within very few frames. The juxtaposition of the happily singing face being rapidly intercut with the image of a victim of violence really echoed the base of what the song is about; "Why did it have to be so good? I hate it".
