Dr. Ron Paul makes his opening statement at the Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology Subcommittee hearing. The focus of the hearing is on recent audits of US gold reserves; challenges to conducting a full audit; and impediments to an accurate assessment of the US gold position, including any leases, swaps or other encumbrances placed upon the gold reserves; and also examine changes to the legislative proposal that will ensure a full and accurate audit, assay, and inventory of US gold reserves.

Kocherlakota: Labor Markets & Monetary Policy, 2010 Annual Report - Narayana Kocherlakota

Video summary of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis 2010 Annual Report, Labor Markets & Monetary Policy. View the full essay at: www.minneapolisfed.org Summary text: In a recent speech, William Dudley, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and vice-chair of the Federal Open Market Committee, summarized the job of the Federal Reserve in this way: "Congress has set an explicit objective for monetary policy: To pursue the highest level of employment consistent with price stability." This elegant formulation tells us that Congress wants the Federal Reserve to make choices that will keep unemployment low insofar as those choices generate inflation that is neither too high nor too low. But implementing this formulation of the Federal Reserve's job immediately confronts us with some practical difficulties. I think about Congress' mandate of price stability as requiring the Federal Reserve to follow policies that will give rise to an average annual inflation rate of 2 percent over the next three to four years. What exactly is the highest level of employment consistent with that definition of price stability? The answer to that question would be easy to estimate if that maximum employment level remained constant over time, but the high-inflation, high-unemployment period of the 1970s taught us that it does not. In this year's Annual Report essay, I discuss how policymakers can use real-time data to make monetary policy choices that allow them to achieve the ...

Fed President Questions Current Monetary Policy

Fareed Zakari interviews Fed Reserve Bank of KC President Thomas Hoenig who breaks ranks and sounds like Dylan Ratigan, Gerald Celente, Ron Paul or Murray Rothbard. Mr. Hoenig has always been a bit of a renegade, yet his recent speech reaches into areas where he (and no other Fed official in my memory) has dared to tread. He is correct of course. It is difficult to believe that he didn't know or suspect all of this for at least two years, if not longer. The question then is why come out now? Surely he could have spoken out a year ago. Is his timing irrelevant or is it meaningful? Hoenig's words must be pleasing to Ron Paul as he gears up his offensive against the Fed and the banking system. Chairman Ben Bernanke, beginning to absorb shots from all sides, is extremely vulnerable as is the institution he commands. To Mr. Bernanke, Hoenig must appear to be a monetary Benedict Arnold. In an extraordinary speech says the big banks must be broken up and essentially implies the system itself is broken and corrupt. This to come from a Fed president indicates a palace revolt is brewing. gramercyimages.com

Ron Paul Hearing 3/17/11: Relationship of Monetary Policy and Rising Prices

paul.house.gov http Washington, DC: Congressman Ron Paul, Chairman of the Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology subcommittee, announced that the subcommittee will hold a hearing to examine the relationship between monetary policy and rising prices (with a particular focus on food and energy prices). The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, March 17th at 10:00 AM, in room 2128 of the Rayburn House office building. "It is unconscionable that published government statistics mislead Americans regarding the true rate of price inflation, which is much higher than commonly-reported CPI numbers," Paul stated. "It is also unconscionable that Federal Reserve Bank officials continue to deny the effects of their monetary expansion on consumer prices. Inflation, properly understood, is a monetary phenomenon. The price inflation Americans suffer today is largely the direct result of relentless monetary expansion by the Federal Reserve over the past decade. Our witnesses will explore how current monetary policy, including QE2, directly impacts the standard of living of Americans in ways that are not reflected in official government data." Congressman Walter Jones, vice chairman of the subcommittee, stated, "The Fed has attempted to convince the public that its money printing campaign is necessary to stimulate America's economic recovery. Instead of recovery, the real effect of the Fed's money printing has been monetization of America's exploding fiscal deficits, devaluation of the ...

Monetary Policy By Federal Reserve Will Cause "Double Digit" Inflation

Tue, 21 Apr 2009 Martin Feldstein, George F. Baker Professor of Economics at Harvard University and President Emeritus of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) voices his concerns that recent monetary actions by the Federal Reserve will cause severe inflation down the road. The renowned economics professor says that it is possible that the country will see the return of "double digit inflation" of the 1970s. In addition, professor Feldstein expressed his skepticism about the ability of the Federal Reserve to keep any future inflationary pressures in check. "It's the monetary policy that worries me. After all what the Fed has done is to allow an explosion of reserves in the commercial banks. A year ago, commercial banks had excess reserves of 3 billion dollars. They now have more than 700 billion dollars, so that once the economy begins to recover - that could be next year, could be late next year, whenever it is - there'll be a strong pressure to convert those reserves into a growth of money and credit, and therefore to start inflationary pressures", says Feldstein.
